“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath rightousness with unrightousness and what communion hath light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14) It is a fact often ignored, or more often brushed aside. As, believers, we are not to allow ourselves fellowship with the people of the world which are in opposition to the teachings of the word of God. That doesn’t mean, of course, that we are not to be a witness and light unto the world. We most certainly are to go forth carrying the message of the gospel to all nations. Our fellowship and friendships however are a different matter. Speaking by direct inspiration of the Holy Ghost, Paul is pointing out to us, in the above verse, an important principle of Jesus’ teaching. We are not to be unequally joined (yoked together) with unbelief. Even within our own friendships or families there sometimes is a person or persons who tend to pull us down, by their unscriptural words or actions. Like, after all begats like, and you or I can easily be corrupted by allowing ours minds and spirits access to the thoughts and actions of those whom we associate; thus creating an unequal yoke. Therefore, to protect ourselves and our ability to be effective in the kingdom of God, we need to walk in the light of the living word, and associate with like minded believers. In this way only will we, as the word instructs us, keep ourselves unspotted from the world (James 1:27), and the only way to do it is to maintain an equal yoke. Praise His Holy Name! “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye seperate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will recieve.” (2 Corinthians 6:17)
