I think that Blink and Spot gotin a little fight, and Spot whipped out his cane and... welll, you can figure out the rest!!! That's why the newsies "Ain't afraid of Brooklyn!!! Spot Conlon just makes [them] a little nervous ." Hey, he did it to Blink, what's stopping him from taking another victom? ?? He was probably drunk when he did it.

Leah's Theory
"before he became a newsie he was abducted by aliens. the next day he became a newsie and was swordfighting with another kid by the name of mush and mush accidentally hit blink in the eye with his sword. blink had to wear the patch for a few weeks and realized that his pape sales were up. so he decided to keep wearing the patch to evoke sympathy from people and sell more papes. so concludes the story of why blink wears the patch. and i only relate the entire truth 'cept that part about the aliens...i may have made that up"
