Sportsman's Park Pits
Sportsman's Park Pits are owned and run by the Palo Alto County Conservation Board. The area contains one large pit that is contected to a medium sized pit by a channel. There are about three smaller pits that are to the east of the main pit area. The small pits are surrounded mainly by trees and have no boat access.
Milfoil was found in these pit in 1998 when the county was going to mine more gravel out of the biggest of the pits. The DNR came to sein out the fish in the pond to move them to one of the smaller ponds when the milfoil was found. The water was being pumped out of the infested pit to the Cylinder Creek that runs to the West Fork of the Des Monies River.
The ponds are scheduled to be sprayed in the fall of 1999 or the early spring of 2000. The boat ramp in this area has been blocked to prevent people from removing the plants to lakes like Five Island, Lost Island, and possibly te Iowa Great Lakes Area.
