Jedi Planet: The Phantom Menace

The Phantom Menace

as seen on the Official Star Wars site and Cinescape Online, respectively.

Episode One is most probably the most anticipated movie in history. Awaited for most of 20 years, George Lucas is bringing us what we all want - more Star Wars. With George Lucas himself directing this, the first episode of the six-part Star Wars franchise and of the prequel trilogy (whose events happen before the existing trilogy). Although the title 'The Phantom Menace' has been chosen by George Lucas, it is rumored that it is not really the title, a la 'Revenge of the Jedi'. This seems unlikey, however, due to the presence of an official Episode One logo with 'The Phantom Menace' (see pictures to right). Rumors are that Episode One is not entitled 'The Phantom Menace' anyway, but chances seem slim. But then, George Lucas still have a little over five months to change what he may.

Principal photography started June 26 and wrapped September 26, 1997. However, additional footage was filmed. It was rumored that much of the footage of The Phantom Menace was unusable due to the haste at which it was filmed, but it has been established that that rumor was false (thankfully!).

To be released on May 21, 1999, The Phantom Menace has already become a widely recognized name. In fact, fans seem to be more open to the title then they were when it was announced on September 25. The trailer, two minutes and twenty-one seconds of film footage, is to be shown in theaters on the weekend of November 20 (at last!). Instead of being tied to a particular film, it will be shown before many movies. In fact, when it was in theaters on November 17 for a unprecedented special preview. Only played in 75 screens in North America, the trailer was shown both before and after Twentieth Century Fox's The Siege, Disney's The Waterboy and Universal's Meet Joe Black. Intriguing. Why would the trailer for a Twentieth Century Fox-distributed film not be on Fox films only? Maybe the trailer will be featured on most films in the theaters.

For those who would rather not wait that long, you can view the entirety of the trailer at the official Star Wars site. Be sure to see it, it is awesome!
