It is likely that a pivotal event occurs between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, a personal betrayl of some kind (i.e. Obi-Wan helping Mrs. Skywalker hide from Anakin) that leads Anakin down the path of the Dark Side. Anakin turns to Palpatine, who plays upon Anakin's insecurities. Palpatine likely drives a wedge between Anakin and Obi-Wan, convincing him to betray his former mentor. In the lightsaber deul which results, Anakin and Obi-Wan face off and Anakin is left both emotionally and physically scarred. Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith is born as his wife runs off and gives birth to their two children.

Realizing that the Old Republic is no longer preotected and that the Jedi have been driven to the brink of extinction, Obi-Wan hides the existance of Anakin's children by spiriting them away to seperate locations. The setting for A New Hope is thus constructed and the Prequel Trilogy ends.
