George Harrison was born on Febuary 25, 1943 as the youngest of Harold and Louise Harrisonīs four children. He is the only Beatle that comes from a large family with an undramatic family background. George grew up on 12 Arnold Grove in Wavertree, only a few miles from where John Lennon and Paul McCartney lived.
The family had a hard time getting George into school, all the schools were full. Eventually he started at Doverdale Primary School. The same school where the two and a half years older John Lennon went. But they never met. When George was six years old the family moved to a house in Speke.
In 1954 he started at the Liverpool Institute, where Paul went one class above him. George tried to be a good student but soon lost interest. He was known as "the boy who dressed in his own way", and he had long hair before anyone else did. By dressing this way George was always noticed. And during his first three years he was always in trouble. But during his fourth year he calmed down and avoided getting into trouble.
He had not shown any interest in music as a child. But when he was fourteen he came home one day and asked his mother for some money, he wanted to buy a guitar. At first he played very little on it. He tried to teach himself but didnīt do very well. He would play until his fingers bled. And as he got better he discovered that the guitar wasnīt very good. So his mother bought him another one.
George met Paul because they took the same bus to school. They both liked skiffle music and played the guitar, so they became friends. They often met and played together. (This was before Paul met John.)
George joined The Quarry Men sometime in the spring of 1958, no one knows exactly
when. It took him a long time to get into the group because he was so much younger then
John and the others.
