"Long ago, but not so very far way, in the town of Albia, State of Iowa, on a planet called Earth, a group of starry-eyed and hungry children of the sixties took part in a ritual of passing and became graduates. They left behind them a legacy of learning and doing that would serve as a challenge for those to follow. And they faced before them a wondrous adventure that all would strive to meet with success.
It was an "age of innocence", an era of conflict, and the brink of significant change. "The Sound of Music", "Dr. Zhivago", and "Help!" graced the silver screen at the King Theater. KIOA Radio played "A Hard Days Night" by the Beatles, Roger Miller's "King of the Road", "A Taste of Honey" by Herb Alpert, and Frank Sinatra's "September of My Years". Lee Marvin won the best actor award for Cat Ballou and the L.A. Dodgers defeated the Minnesota Twins to win the World Series. The average weekly salary was $95.45. An increase in troops in Vietnam spurred an increase in the number of protests. And, actors Robert Downey, Jr. and Charlie Sheen and actress Brooke Shields were born. But, that was then. . . . ."
Yes, that was then. A couple of years ago I wrote that passage as a cover page to the where-are-we-now book for our thirty-year high school class reunion. Thirty years! How did that happen? This is the year that we turn 50+, the year that the baby boom is supposed to begin draining social security, and the year that we all thought would never come. How did these children of the sixties reach the big Five-OH, and what are we going to do about it?
