Western Suburbs have atoned for last year's heartbreaking last minute loss to Canberra by inflicting the same punishment on Newcastle by 19-18.Magpies coach Phil Economidis said after the game that he was very pleased with the result.
"I'm very satisfied with that performance. After last season, the heartbreak around the place indicated there would be a mass walkout, but the players stuck solid and brought home the money.I'm extremely proud of the guys and they can hold their heads high for learning from last year's mistakes. At halftime, it looked as though Newcastle may very well run away with the ballgame, but we stuck to our guns and held on for dear life, and that everyone in the MacArthur region can be very proud of." Newcastle coach Michael Hagan was left fuming after the match due to a very contentious call by video referees Ian Parnaby and George Jankowski.
"These guys are meant ot be the number one and two video referees in the game, but the try that was denied to Robbie O'Davis on 60 minutes was an absolute farce. For Paul Holland to say he wasn't in position to make the call was an absolute travesty for Paul Simpkins performance."However, referees boss and RLCFL CEO Keg jumped to the defence of Holland.
"I told them before the game that if there was any doubt in their minds about a decision in any way, shape or form then they should refer it to Ian and George. Paul decided to have a second look at O'Davis' try and I agree.I thought he dropped the ball."
Both captains moved to deflect attention away from the match officials, Craig Gower saying that the fact that the decision may have turned the tables was indicative of how evenly balanced the teams were, while Andrew Johns said that Newcastle ahve copped some very starnge calls during the season, both for and against and this was the response for the call against Shane Perry which got them here.Gower:
"If the match could be turned in its head by such a close call in our favour,it just shows how much grit we showed to hang in there with such a class side as Newcastle. The call was very close, but I believe it was correct."
Johns:"I suppose we can't complain. The fact is that if we didn't get a top notch call in our favour(From Newcastle's view) then we wouldn't be here.I can;t be hard in the referee or touchjudges. They might've got us here and there may be a bit of justice."

Western Suburbs made it a good day for the magpies in the top 2 grades by overcoming a gallant Newcastle 27-14 in extra time.Going blow for blow in regular time, Newcastle's lack of fitness in comparison with Wests fell away, possibly as a rsult of a midweek camp in the Northern Territory to get the players working extremely hard.Wests coach Bob Lindner said he knew that once the game went to extra time his side would win.
"After the relaxed lead up to the game and the mini triathlon we competed in during teh week,I knew we'd be fresher than Newcastle after their rugged weekend match and long belting week leading into the game.I always knew we didn't have to win in normal time, but just hold on for extra time and we could grind them down, which was what happened."Graham Murray admitted later on that his regime during the week was a bad call and instead should've taken the team with the first grade squad to Fraser Island.
"After the week my guys had I suppose it's no surprise they grew tired as extra time went on.As soon as the guys came in for halftime extra time I could see that they were out on their feet and desperate for a rest, but they couldn't have that rest. They did very well in the circumstances and I hope the Newcastle fans don't blame the players for the loss. They tried hard and did everything asked of them tenfold. It was my fault and I accept full responsibility. We've all learnt a valuable lesson."
Knights captain Owen Craigie said it was very disappointing to lose, but at least the Knights knew they were beaten by a superior team, with no controversial calls for Steve Clark to make.
"We knew that the better side would win in extra time. The referee can't dictate extra time, but he can dictate the match in regular time but i'd say we had the better calls.Full credit to Wests, but it was very disappointing for us."Arthur Little said that this would do a lot to undermine the first grade side next season in a good way.
"The way in which the guys have performed all season is a credit to them and I think taht's what the firsts lacked last year.Genuine stiff competition. They didn't have the ability to rise because they were in a comfort zone. This year they played harder because they had a good reserves side putting the pressure on and I think half this side will go up next year if they don't get pinched first."

As expected, Taree have claimed the President's Cup title in exhilarating style, accelerating away after halftime to defeat Western Suburbs 38-16.A tough first half which could've gone either way was tipped on its head right on halftime when Nathan Barnaby scored a brilliant solo try which was converted. However, that was as close Wests got for the rest of the match, simply being unable to match it with the brilliant Taree side, many fo whom are being courted by clubs to play first grade next season.Coach Tony Rea has begged club directors to put in place a programme whereby the club's promising young talent can be signed for many years to come, however it may come too late to save captain and halfback Michael Sullivan, who is rumoured to have signed a rich 6 figure deal with Western Suburbs in an exchange deal, possibly for his opposite number in todays big one, Nathan Barnaby.
"With so much talent and our finances not being the best, it is imperative that we spot talent early and sign them up.After what happened in reserve grade this year, we need players pressuring to get into first grade. It would be a tragedy for Taree to lose such a talented team, and it would be tragic for the game in general for the side to be spilt up.I mean, this side knocked over the Italy U/21s by 40-0 earlier this year. When you consider how strong Italy are, you have to wonder if these guys could actually win first grade next year."Wests coach David Greene was livid with his players, even though everyone except him thought it was a tremendously gutsy display. He failed to turn up to the press conference and is reported to be at the throats of Bob Lindner and Phil Economidis.CEO Mick Gallagher has a reputation of being intolerant of such behaviour and his coaching career at Wests could be finished.
Both captains were allowed to leave early and didn't attend the conference, through no fault of their own.
