IIn the Beginning before Fayette County the land in the south and southwest was natural wetgrass and tallgrass prairie similar to the foreground.  The  land of the hills in the north and northeast was woodland interspersed with prairie meadows and sloughs.  Along streams,  interspersed throughout were mixed habitats similar to above.  There was an endless variety of flora and fauna that supported a moderate population of Native Americans for several thousand years.  Before that, just the geology and biology of the area evolving through time.  Now there is an endless ribbon of concrete and plowed land from road to road.   There is very little resemblance of any  natural habitat left to experience what  the land was before the "white tide" and the plow.
