....Zachariah Thompson and Priscilla Albaugh came
to Brush Creek or Arlington, Fayette County, Iowa, in 1865, following the lead
of sons Samuel and Morris J. who pioneered in the Taylorville/Brush Creek
area in 1854. Sons William and Alex would soon remove to Fayette County .
The Thompson's were a true pioneer family in the southeast corner and central
part of Fayette County, Iowa, in the early 1850's, and in Harrison/Carroll County, Ohio in the
1820's. All of the other Thompson children would migrate to
Fayette County, Iowa, and many descendents would move as pioneer farmers to the west as
land opened up in the 1870's through the 1890's.
.....Priscilla Albaugh (1805-1879) would meet and marry Zachariah C. Thompson (1796-1880) on January 15, 1822, in New Rumley Twp., Harrison Co., Ohio. The Thompson's were of Scottish background, having immigrated to American as part of the Scotch-Irish movement in the early 1700's. The Thompson Story will be told on another page.
Zach Thompson had migrated at the age of 21 from Maryland to Harrison Co., Ohio, in 1817.
Zach and Priscilla would farm and have ten children in Harrison Co., Ohio. In
1854, two of their children Samuel and Morris Jackson Thompson would migrate and be very early settlers
near Taylorsville, three miles to the N,NW of Brush Creek (later Arlington), Iowa.
Brush Creek however, would soon become the dominate village in the area for the
Thompson Clan. Other children would also migrate to Brush Creek with their
siblings.
....Samuel (my gggrandfather) would die on the way back to Ohio in 1865, perhaps to get the
parents, and be buried in Allen Cemetery in Harrison Co. Thus in 1865, Zach C, age 69, and Priscilla, age 60, would buy 120 acres of a government tract on the very southern edge of the tiny pioneer village of Brush Creek (the history of Brush Creek/Arlington is on other pages} and farm their until their deaths fifteen years later. The farm land was tall and wet grass prairie, located
to the SE of the Six Corner Intersection at the south edge of Brush Creek. The
old Mission Trail from Dubuque to Ft. Atkinson ran on the western edge of their land. Son Morris J. was farming two miles to the
west of Brush Creek. Son Samuel had been farming in the Grannis Canyon area six miles to the north, and apparently
(my gggrandmother) Samuel's wife Martha Sherman Thompson, with six children
(ages 1-10) were still on that farm when Zach and Priscilla arrived from Ohio, in 1865. At
least some of Samuel's and Martha's children were taken in by Morris J.
Martha would go on the marry M.E. Little, a Brush Creek farmer and cooper a
couple of miles NW of town.
....Thus the Thompson/Albuagh Clan connection to Taylorsville, Brush
Creek/Arlington, Fayette County, Iowa, began in
1854, with the migration of the sons, and of Zach Caleb I and Priscilla Albaugh
Thompson in 1865, and the migration of several other children. Zach and Priscilla, Morris J. Eli, and William. are buried in Groat Cemetery, Arlington,
Iowa, along with their spouses and some grandchildren. Many of the grandchildren of Zach and Priscilla continued the pioneer migration to the west, during the last decades of the 1800's. The
Clans were true American Pioneers.

My main interest in the Capper
surname is three fold:
1. The relationship to the Ohio area pioneer surnames living in the same
general location that removed to Fayette County Iowa in the 1850's.
2. The marriage of Jane Capper to William
David Thompson in Carroll County, Ohio and their immigration to Fayette
County, Iowa, in the early 1850's as some of the first pioneers into the
area. Fayette County and Thompson history is linked above. William
David Thompson was the brother of my gggrandfather Samuel
Thompson.
3. And the collection of Thompson data on all lines of offspring of Zach
C. Thompson I and Priscilla Albaugh, in preparation for the 100th consecutive
Thompson reunion to be held in Arlington (formerly Brush Creek), Iowa, the
second Sunday in August of 2003.

Fayette County Biography on Thomas John Capper
http://www.rootsweb.com/~iafayett/capper.htm
T. J. Capper was born in Pleasant Valley township, Fayette county, Iowa, in February, 1857, the son of John and Dorinda (Brooks) Capper, who were born in Carroll county, Ohio. His paternal grandfather was also John Capper, the son of John Capper of Virginia, and Susannah (Morrison) Capper, born in Ireland. The second John Capper was a miller and was killed before the birth of his son John, father of the subject of this sketch. His maternal grandfather was John Brooks, born in Ireland, who married a Miss Fawcett there, came to America in 1818 and located as a pioneer farmer in Carroll county, Ohio. John Capper, the third, was educated in Carroll county, and farmed as a young man, he and his mother owning a farm and carrying on general farming. In 1854 he came to section 17, Pleasant Valley township, bought one hundred sixty acres and improved it, living there until 1890, when he retired, lived for a while in West Union and Elgin, then moved to Benton county, Iowa, in 1908. He was a Republican until Greenback times in 1878, and after that a Democrat, always active in politics and held several township offices. He reared eight children, six of whom are still living, one daughter having died in 1872 and another in 1875. The latter, Susan M., wife of Ezra Patterson, was killed by a runaway team near Elgin on July 31, 1875.
FROM BILL CAPPER, 2/2001---- My book says John Capper left here in 1853 in a
covered wagon pulled by a yoke of oxen, and took his wife Dorinda Brooks Capper
and his mother Susanna Morrison Capper to near Brainard, Iowa. It proceeds to
give a wedding date of 3 Aug1854, which doesn't jibe.
John's father, also John, died in an accident at David's grist mill seven
months before the birth of young John. John's grandfather David, furthermore,
died in another accident at the mill in 1851. I heard there was a lawsuit
between the children of the first marriage and the children of the second
marriage over the estate, but how big could a share have been after dividing
among a widow and 19 children, including deceased John's widow?
In Iowa, young John's eldest son Thomas John Capper later owned Capper's
Hatchery at Elgin. David had another grandson named Emerson McCort Capper who
became my great grandfather. Emerson had nine children, and during the
depression he contacted Thomas and sent Norris, next to youngest child of
Emerson, to Iowa for a job at the hatchery. Norris and I correspond. He still
lives at Elgin and is a lucid 92. A month ago he directed me to his grandson who
sent me to the Horman site. Bill (William Emerson Capper) bill@capper.tc 2/2001

Notes for Jane Capper:
Information Notes---First baby died and was buried on the roadside on their way from Lamartine, Ohio, to Brush Creek, Iowa, in 1854.
Burial?? Grave does not show up in Allen Cemetery, Carroll Co., Ohio, or in Groat Cemetery, Arlington, Fayette Co., Iowa, the two mail Thompson Clan pioneer burial plots.
Notes for William David Thompson:
The first three children were born in Carroll Co., Ohio, which means that the fourth Hanna born 1857, was probably born in Fayette County, Iowa, either near the farm of Samuel or Morris J. in the Taylorsville Area, or to the north of Wadena where the first records of land purchase by William occurs. As of 9/2000, I would tend to think William came to Fayette County a year or so after Samuel and Morris who arrived in the fall of 1854, I am guessing in the summer/fall of 1856. William apparently took up land just north of Wadena, which was only about 5 miles from Samuel's land between Fayette and Wadena, while Morris J. stayed close to Brush Creek, just to the west. All of the Thompson Clan would end up within about eight miles of each other.
Land purchases in Fayette Co., Iowa
---July 20, 1860, William H. Thompson bought in Illyria Twp., SW ¼, NE ¼, Sec 10, T93, R7 (This is 40 acres of very hilly timbered land, 3 miles directly north of present day, 2000, Wadena), recorded in book J, page 597. William (1823-1894) is the oldest son of Zach C. and Priscilla Thompson. This is the first land transaction found for William in Fayette County, thus apparently he made the migration in late 1859 or early 1860 at the age of 37, with wife Jane Capper (1825-1905), son Stewart (1848-1894), daughter Eliza A. (1851-1919), son David C. (1852-1924), and daughter Hanna Priscilla (1857-1922).
---December 1, 1863, William Thompson sold in Pleasant Valley Twp, N ½, SE ¼, Sec 18, T94, R7 (This is 80 acres of basically hill timber 4 miles straight west of present day Elgin.), recorded in book ), page 485.
---March 17, 1864, William Thompson bought in Smithfield Twp., S ½, W ½, and NW ¼, S ¼, Sec 27, T92, R8 (This is 225 acres of tall and wet grass rolling prairie six miles west of the "six corner intersection" and was 2-3 miles west of the land owned by brothers Samuel and Morris.), recorded in book R, page 108.

Biography for Thomas John CAPPER
"The department store of the cities had its precursor, and still has its lesser prototype, in the general store of the country community, where in former days anything from a tack to a coffin could be bought, and which today exposes for sale a range of articles almost equal to that of the department store. In older times the store was the center of social life. In the daytime in the busy seasons of the year the customers were mostly women and children, but in the winter and in the evenings the farmers came in for the mail and brought their marketing and usually had more or less time to discuss the weather, crops and politics. This phase of the general store is changing with changing conditions of life, but it still has its useful place to fill, and has incidentally lifted many a man far up the path of prosperity.
T. J. Capper was educated in the common schools of this township. As a young man he farmed in the summer and taught school in the winter, later remained on the old place and added to the original farm, following general farming. In 1896 he sold out and bought A. Benson's general store at Elgin and has since carried on that business very successfully. In 1882 he was married to Emeline L. Shaffer (sister to J. D. Shaffer mentioned in this work). Their children are: Frank L., clerk in a general store at Dike, Iowa, who married Nellie Pfeifer: Susie, Boies, Flossie M. and Charles L. Mrs. Capper is a member of the United Brethren church. Mr. Capper is a Mason and an Odd Fellow. He is a Democrat, has been on the school board of Elgin ever since coming here, and served as councilman for several years. He has the reputation of being progressive and up to date in every particular, being always ready to assist in undertaking any thing for the general benefit. He has prospered as a merchant from the start, thanks to his fitness for the calling."
