Green Township, Fremont County Iowa

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kearnes
May 1975
Jacob Dawson, founder of Dawsonburg post office, was one of the earliest setters in the north central part of Fremont County. It was located on the stage coach road between Sidney and Tabor Iowa. Dawsonburg slipped into oblivion. Mr. Dawson was a lawyer who arrived in Fremont County with his wife, Editha Jane (Ross), and their son, John (under a year old) in the fall of 1849. He established the post office which bore his name on February 14, 1851. The "town" was a log cabin and seemingly did not grown into a real community. A school in District No. 4 in Green township was known as the Dawsonburg School and was open until some time after the first World War.
