The 28th was mustered in at Camp Pope near Iowa City. They staid in rendezvous a very short time and took the field
as so many of the ynits did at this time, needed man power. The proceeded to Davenport and then by steamer to Helena Arkansas arriving on Nov. 20, 1862. They spent the winter here under very bad conditions. Rain, Snow, Ice. Many took sick and many died. They then took part in Grant's seige of Vicksburg. Their first battle was at Port Gibson and then at Champion's Hill which was a "mean fought fight." Vicksburg fell on July 4, 1863. They then went to New Orleans and patrolled around that area. They then took part in General Bank's infamous Red River Capaign and fought at Sabine Cross Roads. They returned to New Orleans for a while and took a steamer to Alexandria, VA and soon joined General Sheridan for the Shennandoah Valley Campaign. They fought at Windchester Fishers Hill and Cedar Creek where they took heavy casualties. From Virginia they moved to Savannah GA and partolled around that area. They were discharged on January 6, 1865.
Irony: Joseph Miller and his brother Wesley returned to Brooklyn Iowa after the war. Late in the 1860's they went to California to seek their fortune in the gold fields. about 1870 Wesley returned home with the sad news that his brother Joseph was killed in a gold mine explosion at Sutters Mill.
