John Madison Spurlock was born Jan. 26, 1811 in Lee County, VA. It is not known who his parents are.
At age 16, John moved with his family to Tazwell, Clairborne County, TN. About that time John began working
on a barge on the Cumberland River, family legand says that John was "bound out" working as somewhat of an
apprentice on the barges. In a story told by John and Sarah's son Charles Mason Spurlock. "John was working
on a barge and spied Sarah Ann Mason sitting in a sycamore tree with a group of girls. They had taken the sycamore
leaves and pinned them together with thorns making hats. "He took a shine" to young Sarah and began sparking her."
On May 7, 1835 in Knox County, Ky. John Madison Spurlock married Sarah Ann Mason. Sarah Ann was born December 4, 1818
in Knox County, Ky, the daughter of William Mason and Elizabeth Evans. Mary Spurlock Reed recalled this story about
her grandparents. " They married young against the will of Sarah Ann's parents. John was looked down upon, since he was
a crew member on a river barge." She recalled other differences between the two families. John was against owning
slaves, but the family that Sarah was from had many." As the story goes John and Sarah both lost their inheritance by
marrying, which probably prompted them to move from their home in the South. (Sarah wasn't mentioned in the will of her
father, William Mason.)Sarah Ann Mason was the daughter of William Mason and Elizabeth Evans, it is reported that she is the
Granddaughter of Robert(The Patriot)Mason and Mary King Evans. All are reportedly buried in the Mason Family Cemetery
