A Hotel guest and his wife are in their bed in their room, when there is a rat-a-tat-tat on the door. The guest rolls over and looks at his clock. It is half past three in the morning.

"I'm not getting out of bed at this time of the night," he thinks, and rolls back over. Then, a louder knock follows.

"Aren't you going to answer that?" says his wife.

So he drags himself out of bed and goes to the door. He opens the door and there is a man standing at the door. He realizes the man is drunk.

"Hi there," slurs the stranger. "Can you give me a push?"

"No, get lost. It's half past three. I was in bed," says the man and slams the door.

He goes back to bed and tells his wife what happened and she says, "That wasn't very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick up the kids from the baby sitter and you had to knock on a stranger's door to get us started again? What would have happened if he'd told us to get lost?"

"But the guy is drunk," says the husband.

"It doesn't matter," says the wife. "He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him." So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes into the hall and down stairs to the Parking Lot.

Not being able to see the stranger anywhere he shouts, "Hey, do you still need a push?"

And he hears a voice cry out, "Yeah, please."

So, still unable to see the stranger he shouts, "Where are you?"

And the stranger replies, "I'm over here on your swing."

"The Black Panther was our totem animal in the 2/47th Mechanized Infantry. Many of us thought of ourselves as Panthers, like a high school varsity team, you know? Like the adolescents we were, though after a couple of months in the bush we began thinking we were men, old men, really old men, but we were boys, and we drew the conclusions boys draw, uninformed and naive and too stupidly proud to admit when we were duped, because weakness (supposed or otherwise) is embarrassing to adolescent boys who need to be men more than they need to use good sense!" --Dudley

"We begin by pointing out in a time honored way what Free Speech means and is, like how propagandists during The Cold War, an experience in which all we Boomers have our roots, as fully as in the experience of living through the Civil Rights Movement in the late fifties and the sixties, would make the point that in the Soviet Space Program, there was often secrecy until the cosmonauts were safe, but in our Democracy, if NASA blew up valuable men's lives on the launch pad, the whole World would know about it AS it happened, because that IS what being a Democracy IS all about, airing our dirty laundry openly, rather than hiding stuff like the "tyrannical, censoring, manipulative COMMUNISTS do, because COMMUNISTS aren't FREE," which is why we were told to believe "The Nam was a Noble Cause"! We were told we were fighting AGAINST the ideal that repressive authority that acts behind closed doors to restrict the Freedoms of the People and preserve lies that kill them and maintain power for the tyrants is a good thing; that we were fighting for the right of People everywhere to Be Free to disagree openly with each other and with authority and to accept one another's imperfections, because inside, we are all fools, especially those who jealously seek to hog power and monopolize "Truth"!

Regardless of the miserable way in which many of our superiors behaved for their own self interest, then and since, about sixty thousand of us died trying to do our best to defend this self evident TRUTH and the system we hope someday will live by it, about three hundred thousand of us were wounded, and a bunch more have died at the hands of a Society that has killed us by hating us because it is a Society that can't handle perceived defeat and can't accept responsibility for the faulty premises upon which it builds its compulsively concocted schemes.

We had nothing to do with where they used us and how, or that we were naive and came late to realize our betrayal in order to do something about it, and it has been difficult to accept that we were duped, but that is life in these United States, where duping others is not only socially honored and rewarded, but is a skill we depend on for survival, though we all hate it when we fail to be smart enough to avoid it being done to us! Bullets accomplish nothing if afterward we do not insist on living the fulfillment's of our earned rights that common sense should already guarantee, but doesn't! Living lies made up to take the place of truths we cannot accept, which are denied to us by others, or which seem too frightening to be faced, is only a walking death we hadn't reckoned on beyond the other walking death we endure each day, that requires us to slip outside reality to survive.

In Memory of those who have suffered and died to secure these things, we continue the sacred exercise of our most important right, and continue to work for the goal of ultimate strength in diversity, free choice, the right of privacy, and equality for all as best we can, despite our weaknesses and periodic errors in judgment...to the end that Repressive Authority become entirely controlled some day by the principles of Freedom of Thought, Expression, and Self-fulfillment with equal regard for the rights and dignity of others!
