On School Spirit As I sit here in study hall, I observe the strangley-clothed children that sit around me. Some wear haiwaiin Lais or construction helmets. Many wear shirts saying, "Go West, Beat City" or "Roast the Little Hawks." Some of the more "rebellious" ones are donned in T-Shirts saying, "Fuxity" which I assume is a censored version of Fuck City. Their attempts to brandish their "inappropriate" shirts result in being told to put on a sweatshirt, which they graciously accept. A man wearing a greeen and gold toga, with his face painted the same colors enters the room, What the fuck is going on? Did I take some bad acid? Nope, though wheteher everyone else did I don't know. Today is the day of the relentlessly anticipated City vs. West football game. All of this for a fucking football game. I just don't get it. Almost every locker in the hall is adorned with green and gold signs. I found "Crank up the diesel" to be the most amusing of them. I don't quite understand what diesel fuel has to do with football, probably the ame thing that makes kids go crazy for the sport. Every year I hear about kids getting into fights over this… which I find rather silly, though quite real as I give my friend a shirt to wear over his, which is accidently the colors of City High. Looking around again I see that I am among the minority of those not showing "School Spirit." Fine with me. I'm sure as hell not going out of my way to celebrate a foolish sports contest. We have a"Spirit Assembly" after our shortened afternoon classes, which for me translates into early release. Another thought of immense amusement comes into my head. On Monday, after this wonderful game, everyone will be talking about how "we" kicked ass, or about how "we'll" get revenge in the playoffs. I laugh, wondering exactly what part of the team these individuals played. Even if is a football player making these statements, I wonder not who, because that's all too obvious from observing today's school population, but why anyone would care? To sum it up, football is entirly meaning less, as are all sports, and people shouldn't get all crazy about the "big" game. They should go about their silly little lives like nothing happened, because in reality nothing did happen.
