MISSION STATEMENTS
* For profits have borrowed form the non profits. Mission / values dedication focus to an idea.
* states purpose, is a guiding statement to communicate essence to stake holders and public - - and the people who work within it
* Best = 1 sentence - clear - consise
who? What> When? Where?
4 THINGS THAT MAKE NON PROFITS SUCCESSFUL
1 Clearly agreed upon mission statement
2.strong competent executive director
3. Dynamic board of directors
4. Organization Wide commitment to fund-raising
IF it is "clear and agreed upon" . . .
- time won't be wasted barking up the wrong tree
- won't be too narrow a focus / too broad a focus (both are dangerous)
- Tell when to go out of business
Mission Statements help motivate
- make consistant decisions
- build organizational unity
- provide framework ofr organization
- set organization apart (that's hard part!)
3 Parts of a Mission Statment
PURPOSE
- why we exist / result of work
- couple of phrases / verb or infinitive
- indicates change (increase, decrease, celebtrate)
BUSINESS STATEMENT -
- what activity to acomplish purpose
("performed and presented to children")
VALUES
- inherent or expressly stated
(Comittment to diversity, intergrety, excellence)
Consider who are benificiaries of the work "vision" and "mission" sometimes used interchangeably.

- write own mission statement.
- imply values central to life and goals that drive your life
-vision or directio no matter what job you might land
- not a work objective but a life philosophy
