Symphony 1997

Tan Dun

for solo cello, Bianzhong, Children's Chorus and Orchestra

This is truly one of the greatest, most amazing, pieces of music ever written! Imagine Beethoven, Coopland, Berloiz and Strvinsky rolled into one, AND THEN add Yo-yo Ma and the Bianzhong (Bianzhong is (are?) a 2,400 year old Chineese bells discovered in 1987. According to the liner notes, 65 bronze bells have a 5 octave range and can play a 12 tone chromatic scale!! (check out your music history text book -- there was not supposed to be have a 12 tone scale during the antiquity!)

Tan Dun is Amazing (by the way, he is premiring his newest piece with the Minnesota Orchestra in October -- and Yo-yo Ma is the featured performer for the September 13 concert - if anyone has an extra ticket they'd like to get rid off - I'll happily take it off your hands!)

Someday when I'm more HTML savy - I'll have track 13 playing when this page is accessed. (Or at least a good link to down load but I have not yet figured that out (I'm still checking and double checking how to do simple codes!) BUT I'm spending my summer under the same roof as a computer geek -- STATED GOAL -- learn how to do it by fall!)
