Our Mission:

A440 Collaborations exists to provide accessible music education to the community. We are a non-profit organization inviting everyone to participate in musical processes as a student, teacher, performer, and consumer.

Our Values:

We believe in collaboration and will work with schools, parents, students, professional musicians and the community to promote quality musical experiences. We believe every student can be a teacher, and every teacher a student. We believe music is a performing art and provide regular performance opportunities.

2003 Strategic Goals

* Expand program offerings to meet the needs of a wider community.

* Increase the number of teachers.

* Establish connections with the local public and private school music programs.

Program Proposal and Budget Request

Continuing with our mission to provide accessible Music Education, and our belief that every student can be a teacher, 440 Collaborations proposes the establishment of a Music Buddy Program. The program will offer talented high school students an opportunity to teach beginning students with 440 Collaborations as a "music buddy". Anyone taking lessons with a music buddy will pay $10 per lesson (substantially cheaper than the current rate for private music instruction) and perform on two recitals each year.

The program director will contact music teachers at local high schools, and use their recommendations to recruit music buddies. Music buddies agree to attend five pedagogy workshops, to equip them with the skills of effective teachers. The Program Director will regularly observe lessons taught by music buddies to provide feedback and encouragement.

Anticipated Program Outcomes and Benefits

* Beginning students will have access to quality, affordable, music lessons.

* 440 Collaborations will have more teachers and serve more students.

* Significant relationships will be established between 440 Collaborations and the local schools.

These outcomes relate directly to the mission, values and strategic goals of 440 Collaborations. I am requesting approval of this program and the proposed budget from the Collaborations Board of Directors.

Notes and assumptions regarding this budget:

Note 1:
We expect to recruit 10 buddies this year, each teaching an average of 3 students (30 students total). Each buddy agrees to teach 15 lessons to each student each term, and 440 Collaborations has 2 terms (roughly following the school calendar)

Note 2: St. Mary's Church has agreed to rent space to 440 Collaborations at a rate of $20 an hour provided we reserve it 2 months in advance.

Note 3: Each student will bring an average of 3 people to a recital (parents, siblings, grandparents, etc.). We expect to have a three page program for each recital.

Note 4: Music Buddies are not employees of 440 Collaborations, but Independent contractors. 440 Collaborations will not pay taxes of benefits for music buddies.

Note 5: We'd like to have an extensive library of method and pedagogy books avaliable as a reference for music buddies. 20 method books, and 6 pedagogy books will give a broad overview of current ideas and methods.
