"Close your eyes, for your eyes will only tell the truth, and the truth isn't what you want to see...in the dark it is easy to pretend...."
----alternate lyrics to "The Music of the Night."
So, you are probably wondering what this section is all about. Well...since you know me as a Phantom Phan, you're probably thinking, "Oh, good God, not more Phantom gibberish."
Yes, this is a Phantom site, and yes, masks have a lot to do with Phantom of the Opera, but I'm thinking of the masks we wear every day: the psychological masks, the chatnames we use to meet people and perhaps strike up a romance; the way we think of ourselves can be a mask, too..especially if we are sensitive and doormat-ish enough to let people choose the sort of mask we will wear.(I know all too well about this because I went about like a bloomin' doormat for quite a while!) But some masks can be a facade we WANT to portray, because we wish we were someone(or someTHING else altogether). We say, "I'm a wannabe such-and-such." That's a mask, too! Especially when we sometimes do not possess the qualities needed to even remotely resemble the kind of person/thing we want to be.
But for all our masks, we often end up wishing that people could accept us for who we are. I can hear you saying, "Well, theoretically, it's not difficult to look beyond a person's facades." No, it's not...theoretically speaking! It's quite another issue altogether when you think someone has accepted you for who you are, then has dropped you like a hot potato because you're not who they think you ought to be, or what you ought to look like according to society.
So, people: which came first: our masks or our tendencies towards rotten-to-the-core superficiality?
If you want to posit your theories, e-mail me! I'm an armchair psychologist...I can handle it! *hehehe*
On a lighter note, here are some names/alter egos/masks that I've chosen for myself.
NightPhan; Mlle de la Nuit(given to me by my friend Sergei); Rose_Phantom; CelticGypsyPhantom; GypsyWoman; CelticPhantom; Zorro-accomplice-wannabe; Vangelisa(a made-up feminine version of my favourite composer's stage name).
