While I'm convinced that the Beatles were the greatest recording group to ever make a record, I am equally convinced that The WHO was the greatest group to ever take the concert stage. The stage was their world and where the awsome power and energy of their music came to life.  Pete Townshend once stated that they took a completely opposite approach to music than groups like the Beatles who made their music in the studio, then attempted reproduce that music as close as they could on the concert stage. For the Beatles, the complexity of their studio music eventually made it impossible for them to perform live anymore.  Meanwhile, the challenge for The Who was to capture the excitement and energy of their live performances on record.  Their live performance was their purpose.  I suppose that's why more then 30 years later, the three surviving members of The Who are once again storming the stage performing Quadrophenia as well as other greatest hits with Beatle off-spring, Zak Starkey on drums. (Who drummer Keith Moon was Zak's drum mentor as a child so who could be more fitting?)
