Nursing Home Horror Story

In 1988-1990 I worked as the Directory of Nursing Services (D.O.N.) in a Residential Nursing Home in Albia, Iowa. I had warned the owner/administrator on several occassions that he needed to straighten up and do right by the Residents of the Home. In November of 1989 I turned him into the Department of Inspection and Appeals. I resigned in January 1990 AFTER their inspection. The owner knew I had turned him in and my family and I received threatening phone calls concerning "late night, early morning" visits to our home. I testified against him and if you will click on the links below you can read some of the newspaper coverage of the trial and it's out come.

Nursing Home Employees, Speak out when you see the elderly being abused in your facility! ANY type of abuse. Working short constantly does constitute abuse as the Resident is not able to receive turning, changing, ambulating in a timely manner. All are possibly harmful to the resident. Saftey is another issue of working short, overly tired employees are not alert as they should be, two person transfers and ambulations being done by one person. All of you know what constitutes elder abuse....SPEAK OUT!!! Don't let this happen to your Residents! For you who say but I need my job, I say which is more important, human dignity and safety or money?
