Sailorvenus, or Sailor V as she was known to the public and in Naoko Takeuchi's manga prior to Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon, was the first of the Senshi to awaken and to fight in the name of Love and Justice. She was awakened by her white cat, Artemis, who later met up with Sailormoon's companion Luna to train the rest of the Inner Senshi.
Sailorvenus was the last to appear before the Inner Senshi. At first, she was believed to be the mysterious Moon Princess who the other Senshi were looking for. In the manga, she claimed as such and guised herself as the princess until the real one could be found ... to protect the Moon Princess' identity. However, in the anime, when the other Senshi ask her if she is the princess, she smiles a little and responds, "perhaps." But she doesn't really know either.
Not until Usagi starts having recurring memories is it revealed that she is Princess Serenity. Venus then takes on the role as leader of the Inner Senshi, whose prime directive is to protect Sailormoon. One other time, in Sailormoon S, Venus disguises herself as Sailormoon to again protect her identity. Kaolinite has the group cornered in a warehouse, and is trying to take possession of Usagi's Pure Crystal Heart. Kaolinite and her Daimon are convinced that Usagi is Sailormoon. Sailor Venus uses Luna's disguise pen and turns into a very fluffy-haired version of Sailormoon.
Sailorvenus, like the Rome deity Aphrodite, stands for love and beauty. Her attacks illustrate as such. Her first attack is "Venus! Crescent Beam." It gives the victim a pretty good zapping. Others are "Venus! Love-me Chain" and "Venus! Love and Beauty Kiss," or something like that.
Her real-life personality is also true to her protecting planet. Aino Minako is a very pretty young woman who is careful about her appearance and is quite the boy-chaser. (She goes after Haruka in S, and the Three Lights in Stars). She also wants to be a real celebrity. And several episodes over the five episodes have gone into detail about this. One thing I get confused about is how an anime series and video games, as well as television programs have been made of her as Sailor V. Maybe this was done without anyone discovering her true identity. And it probably gave Minako a taste of the limelight that she didn't want to let go of.
Mina/Minako has the most open personality. She can be friendly to everyone. She will show genuine concern for the spiritual well being of anyone else, especially Serena. She has no enemies, however that does not mean she can't do her own share in combat. In order to help make friends, she often tries to use the playful (non-mischievous) approach in becoming friendly.

Sailor Venus is somewhat special in the Sailor Senshi story line. In the translation, Sailor V is mistakenly referred to as Sailor Venus in an episode. Actually, Sailor V is Sailor Venus, only she gets publicly known as Sailor V. Remember, she had her cool glasses when she first appeared.
