Muscle cars were a product of the big V-8 engines and the hot rodding techniques coming out of the 50's,60's and early 70's. There can never be any true muscle cars again. They have all been built and are not produced anymore. Straight line power and speed, unchallenged on the strip or asphalt. There were many models of muscle cars produced.

There have been very few true muscle bikes produced. Every major company made an attempt. Only Honda and Yamaha succeeded to any degree. Honda's V65 Magna, in 1983 set the standard and perhaps is responsible for creating the name and mystique of the muscle bike. Honda followed the Magna within a year with the V65 Sabre. Honda's engines produced the hottest production bikes around until 1985 when Yamaha introduced the Vmax. Big, heavy, powerful, the tried and true V-4 engine from the touring model Venture was souped up, utilizing some basic hot rodding techniques, and V-Boost would be born :) |

Basically stock until
1999 the red 95 took a little test
run to 150 before becoming the world's fasted touring bike. A car at 80, feels like a Max
at 120. The engine and overall systems are so very strong, capable of withstanding constant hard
runs and lending itself to being souped up even more, into the 110-200+hp
range, at the rear wheel. Vmax has turned into Zmax: If you own a Vmax and are a basic wrench with limited facilities, you can make the mods mentioned on Zmax at the top of the page. Pics and procedures will be found linked off this site. Looking back, the first thing I would do is to correct the sloppy front end, as the power train is fine but is coupled with an absolutely terrible suspension. That is unless you just want to sit, take it easy and cruise around with the rookies or "other" bikes. You should not have to correct Damaha's mistakes and lack of consideration, but have no choice if you want a "real muscle bike." Get the front suspension fixed first. Looking back the first thing I would do is install a $100 set of Works dual rate fork springs. Emulators or Progessive would be find. Anything to get the "ball point" stock springs into the junk pile. This a good time to lower the fork tube in the triple tree up to one inch, and the rubber washer in the headset needs to be replaced with a metal washer to firm up the headset. I have to laugh everytime I think of Damaha engineer's trying to figure out a way at no cost or changes to keep riders eyes in their sockets at high speed, and then stay on the bike during "re-entry." I can just see some little gardening engineer coming in with the rubber washer out of his garden hose, proclaiming, "I feex eet." I would follow the fork springs, lowering the forks up to one inch and headset washer, with a billet aluminum fork brace. For about $200+ you will see an absolutely drastic improvement in handling. The front end suspension will now be more inline with the strong stock engine. |

Other companies made an honest run at the muscle bike name and title. Honda bit the dust by the end of the 1986 model, apparently as the result of a severe cam eating oiling problem in the upper heads that apparently was not properly corrected or exposed. The Vmax has remained in production since 1985, basically unchanged and unchallenged. You can in 2000, go out and buy Mr. Max, still capable of holding its own on the strip, light to light, and shining at highway roll on's.

What is the Vmax? It is not a Harley, nor a cruiser, nor a squid, nor a ST. It is a muscle bike. For the few who dare, it is Thee Muscle Bike. The need for speed. There is Only One, The Max! |
