My family and I moved into this really nice house in a small town in Iowa. This house was a really beautiful house, basically 4 levels. It had a very large living room with all natural woodwork. Kitchen, den, 3/4 baths and a dining room as well. To this day we still don't know very much history on this house. It had 3 bedrooms and a full bath on the second floor, a full attic and a full basement.
Well we had several strange things happen in this home but didn't really pay much attention to the mishaps. For starters, for some reason every time we would put a new light bulb in the attic it would last maybe 24 hours and it would blow. We just basically figured it was in the wiring of this old house.
The first notice of something strange, we had spent the entire day out as a family, we came home one night quick to just grab a bite to eat and run out the door again. I ran up stairs, I was the only one to go up stairs, to grab sweatshirts for everyone, I went into the bathroom.... right past the attic door. And ran down the stairs. Nothing was out of place. We returned home around mid-night, and it was always a race to get to one of the bathrooms, so I was the first to run up the stairs to the bathroom, as I turned the top of the stairs to go into the bathroom I came to a sudden stop before I ran into the door to the attic. I yelled for my husband to come up so we could investigate and we found nothing. I assumed it was probably due to the train, but after further investigating, I learned that the door was to heavy to be vibrated open by the train. This door was a heavy-duty insulated door. I thought that maybe someone had came in through the window to the attic, but after investigating, the window was to small for a body to squeeze through and also there was no ledge, a person would have had to put a very long ladder in the front of the house to get into this house. So we basically just let this miss hap linger in the back of our minds. This was just the first of many odd occurrences to come.
Another night... My husband was working on the 3-11 shift. He had come home from work and decided to watch some TV after eating. I decided I would go on to bed. I hadn't been in bed long, when I heard someone call my name. Assuming it was my husband I went to the middle of the stairs and asked him what he wanted.... he informed me that he hadn't called my name... I insisted that someone had just called my name and he insured me I was nuts. This happened again another night when my husband was working the mid-night shift. There was no one in my home that would call me by my first name. Assuming that my husband might have forgotten something I ventured down stairs. There I found every light in the living room on even lights that I never used. The television was also on, assuming that maybe my husband had come home, I looked over the house and found nothing. So I then assumed it was my son sneaking up from the basement and ran when he heard me moving around up stairs..... I went to the basement to find him sound a sleep. I then shut every thing down again, made sure that all the doors were still locked, which they were and went on to bed. I just thought it strange and kept it in the back of my mind.
There were several more happenings on the same line as this, lights coming on or hearing your name called when no one was around... but the next two things that happened really convinced me that this house was haunted. They really didn't scare me, but did give me goose bumps. My husband was on the mid-night shift so he wasn't home. My oldest son was staying at a friend’s house, my other two sons slept up stairs and it was really late. The 3 of us went up stairs to bed. My youngest in his room and each of us to our rooms. I usually kept a light on in the bathroom as a night light for my youngest and he would usually not go to sleep unless it was on. I crawled into bed and realized that the light was not on. I asked my middle son if he would turn the light on and being so tired he didn't want to get out of bed. I called for my youngest and he was already out like a light. So we decided we would just skip the night light for one night. After about 10 minutes or so in bed, not quite a sleep yet, I heard a big thump coming from the bathroom. Assuming it was one of the boys up I kind of yelled at them to get back in bed. When my son informed me that they were in bed, then he asked me if I heard the thump. He then informed me that the bathroom light was on. I was really upset with him cause I thought he had maybe left the bathroom window unlocked so that his friend could come in the window. I got up and investigated the window and the bathroom to find the window locked from the inside and nothing out of the ordinary but the light now turned on. Final finally before we moved......... after making sure everything was locked up, every thing was shut down, and the night light was on I crawled into bed... the kids had all gone to bed well before 9pm so I knew they were sound a sleep by now. I watched my husband drive away to work and made sure the garage door was down and all the doors to the house and garage were locked. So off to bed I go. I wasn't in bed long maybe 15 minutes or so... when I got this feeling of something standing next to my bed.... so I opened my eyes... and I could see a figure against the white walls standing next to my bed... I assumed it was my youngest son maybe had a bad dream or wasn't feeling good. I asked him if he was ok... no answer... Again I asked him questions... and got no response... thinking maybe he was asleep I reached out to touch him and at that instant it was gone... I could now see the entire wall behind whatever phenomenon was standing there.
What ever spirit lives in that old house, was not mean or threatening. Just a little eerie and seemed to like to watch over me. All though the kids do have a few stories of their own.
