David and Marsha Grady Family
Our BAAS Family

Marsha's second great-grandmother was Josephine Waring BAAS, the daughter of Joseph Waring BAAS and Mary Margaret GEANDREAU. Josephine was born 11 July 1872 in Monroe County, Alabama, and died 1 December 1925, in the Wildfork community of Monroe County. She is buried at Coleman Cemetery. She married William Henry COLEMAN on 29 November 1889 in Monroe County, Alabama.

Josephine was descended from Thomas BAAS who was born in England ca 1760-1770. It is believed that he emigrated to Charlestown, South Carolina about 1788, and he was naturalized as a United States citizen on 27 May 1788. On 4 June 1792, he married Dorothea HORLBECK in Charleston.

Joseph and Dorothea's son, Thomas Emanuel BAAS, was christened 21 June 1797 at St. Phillips Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Joseph and Dorothea may have had other children, as there are several christening records for BAAS children at St. Phillips Church during this approximate time period.

Thomas Emanuel married Elizabeth (Eliza) Esther PERRY, daughter of Isaac PERRY and Elizabeth DROZE. Their son, Joseph Waring BAAS was born 4 November 1827 in Charleston and was named after the husband of Elizabeth's sister, Mary Elizabeth PERRY WARING. Joseph WARING was a hero of the War of 1812. The dates of death and burial places of Thomas Emanuel and Eliza Esther BAAS are unknown.

By the time he was about 16, Joseph Waring BAAS's family had moved from South Carolina to Mobile, Alabama, where he married Mary Margaret GEANDREAU, the daughter of Jean (or John) GEANDREAU and Margaret LIONI, on 8 May 1855 in Mobile.

Joseph Waring BAAS was in the wholesale dry goods business in Mobile until 1868, when he moved his family by steamboat to Claiborne and then to what was known as Jones Mill (now Frisco City) in Monroe County, Alabama. He, his wife and children are listed in the 1870 Federal Census of Monroe County, Alabama. Joseph Waring BAAS was in ill health, and died 2 June 1872. He is buried at Baas Cemetery in Frisco City, next to his wife, Mary Margaret, who died 28 January 1906.
