David and Marsha Grady Family
Our GRADY Family

The Grady's are obviously David's line! Both David's father (Hershal Lavon GRADY) and his grandfather (Webb Money GRADY) married and had their first children while in their 30's, so unfortunately, we knew very little about David's great-grandfather, Sam GRADY. We knew the names of some of his children, but not his spouse(s), his parents, his siblings, or where he came from prior to settling in south Mississippi.

Recently, Marsha gained some clues that we believe may be our missing link, but needs to do a significant amount of research to verify the link between "our" Sam GRADY and Samuel GRADY, son of William Jackson GRADY and Tecusah SMITH.

William Jackson GRADY was born about 1815 in North Carolina. He married Caroline BROWN who was also born in North Carolina, about 1820. By 1850, they had settled in Chambers County, Alabama, where they are listed in the 1850 Federal Census. W.J. GRADY's family are reported to be among the earliest settlers in Chambers County, but Marsha has not had an opportunity to research earlier census records to verify this.

The 1850 Census lists W.J. GRADY, age 35 and a farmer, with wife Caroline, age 50, and their children: Sophia, 12; John, 9; Samuel, 7; Frances, 5; Nathaniel, 3; Zachery, 7 months. Their son, Samuel is about the right age to be the father of Webb Money GRADY.

Samuel GRADY, son of W.J. GRADY, was born 8 August 1843 in Alabama. He first married Tecusah (sp?) SMITH between 1865-1870. She died in 1882. Samuel and Tecusah had at least one daughter, Lucy Tecusah GRADY. Lucy Tecusah GRADY was born 1 July 1870, probably in Itawamba County, Mississippi. As Webb Money GRADY is known to have been born 5 January 1878, it is likely that he is also their child.

After Tecusah's death, Samuel GRADY married again to E. A. Unknown. If this is the right Samuel GRADY, then Webb Money's brothers, Oscar and Grover Cleveland are the children of this second marriage, based on their known dates of birth. Webb Money GRADY is believed to have four other siblings (Lester, Lois, Mattie, and Wood) with unknown dates of birth.

Webb Money GRADY was born 5 January 1878, reportedly in Simpson County, Mississippi. He married Wincie Mae HERRIN, on 2 November 1910. Webb and Wincie Mae lived in Collins, Covington County, Mississippi, where he was buried after his death 21 October 1961.

David's father was the fourth son of Webb Money and Wincie Mae ("Big Mama") GRADY - Hershal Lavon GRADY was born 8 February 1924 in Collins, Mississippi. Hershal married Glady BEARD. From about age 18, Hershal worked for the "phone company" in south Mississippi (primarily Jackson, McComb, and Natchez) before retiring in 1988. After his retirement, he served as a representative in the Mississippi Legislature. Hershal died 8 March 1996 and is buried in Collins, Mississippi.

Webb and Wincie Mae's other children include: William Lyndell GRADY; Samuel Brown GRADY (died at age 15); and Harvey Ray GRADY.
