On our visit to Fais Island, we took a variety of gifts to present to the Paramount Chief and the people of Fais Island. The following are the gifts we presented:
Our first gift to Paramount Chief Carlos Haruei was a wheel chair which was purchased from Finley Hartig Homecenter in Dubuque, IA. We wanted to give the King something he could use personally. When we first met the Paramount Chief he was already seated in the chair in front of his home. The chair was rushed to him as soon as we landed. Unfortunately the Paramount Chief suffers with an ailment making it difficult to walk and move around the island. We hope he will get good use from the chair. |
Our second gift was Christmas candy, which was to symbolize my 1948 greeting to then Paramount Chief Mahol. In 1948, one of the crewman gave Christmas candy to King Mahol during our initial contact.
Our third gift was a photo album containing photographs from 1948 which were taken by the navy rescue plane. As we went through the photographs with the Paramount Chief, it appeared to please him very much to see the old pictures. He made various comments as we looked through the album indicating he remembered the event.
Our fourth gift was an plague with a photograph of the crewman as well as an engraved plate listing their names and information about the plane. The Paramount Chief was delighted to receive it and stated he was going to proudly hang it in his home to show visitors.
Our fifth gift was a small die-cast replica of the B-29 Superfortress which brought me here nearly 54 years ago. We had the exact insignia’s put on the model as my B-29 bomber which landed by Fais in 1948.
Finally, our sixth gift was a number of t-shirts with a photograph of the B-29 resting in the sea from 1948 for the Chiefs of the Island to wear and other citizens of Fais Island.
