For the first time, students from Hempstead High School in Dubuque have qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament.
Juniors Blake Hohmann and Bryan Keck qualified for the national tournament with their performance earlier this month during a national qualifer at Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin, Iowa, according to Hempstead Debate Coach Don Stanner. "They seized one of four spots for the state of Iowa", Stanner wrote in an email to the Telegraph Herald. "This is a first for Hempstead High School!" He noted that juniors Sameer Farquee and Emma Gilles made it as the alternate. The national tournament is slated for June 16 to 21 in Dallas. Stanner said the event will draw 250 teams from across the U.S. and Asia.
