I picked the Indiana Jones theme this year for our 2012 Pinewood Derby Race.
Dad wasn't really excited about this idea, but got on board with it as we started
to build it. We decided to make some stalagmites to run along the outside of the car.
We thought this might give a better cave look.
Dad cut some out of balsa wood, and formed the wheel wells.
He then had me do some whittling to bring them to points.
After we had them formed as desired, he had me glue them on the car.
After the glue dried, I did a lot of sanding, and added
some putty in places to better round out the stalagmites.
There were two neat aspects of our car that made it different from all the others.
The neatest thing was it could play music. Yep - the theme song from
Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Dad took a switch out of an old burger king toy, and attached it to a sound card
which played the Indy theme song.
With a little work; behold: With the flip of a switch we had a toy car playing music!
This was cool.
The other unique aspect of our car, was our paint choice.
I chose a textured paint at a hobby store.
Dad wasn't too sure about this at first,
but after he had me spray the car, he really liked it.
Dad got out his old air brush and added a few airbrush highlights, and
we had what we thought was a pretty cool paint job which looks like a stone cave.
Finally, we added a lego guy and the golden statue for our hood ornament,
and another burger king toy for the boulder.
We created a caption on both sides of the car called "Indiana Jones and the Derby Challenge".
Dad thought this was suitable, and seemed like a movie title.
In the end, we had a car we were proud of!
