Flint Ridge

2 miles north of U.S. 40 on Rt. 68. This irregular range of hills, about 10 miles in length, is between Newark and Zanesville. Many centuries ago pre-historic Indians, on foot and in dugout canoes, came to these hills for much need flint.

The flint was quarried in pieces of convenient sizes and taken back to their villages. They used this high quality flint for making tools, weapons, spear points and other implements.

Later Indians continued to use flint. Flint Ridge was so important to the Indians that when working here they were immune from attack. It was natural ground.

At the museum in Flint Ridge one can get a geology lesson. You can see the beautiful raw flint and the many ways Indians used it. Flint is considered to “Ohio’s Gemstone.” The colors range from red to blue to gray to black.
