Fort Hill State Memorial

20 miles south of Bainbridge, near St. Rt. 41 and 124. Fort Hill is high on a plateau of 40 acres overlooking a rugged limestone gorge. Brush Creek flows around the plateau on three sides and the fort is almost hidden among the tree. A long steep hiking trail leads you to the plateau where the Hopewell People piled earth and stone 15 feet high to build a wall around the summit. After walking a mile and a half around, following what is left of the wall, one gets some idea of the work it took to build it. Thousands of basket-loads were lugged up the steep slope. There were originally borrow pits wall materials also.

A village was built at the base of the fort. Hopewell pottery fragments, spear points and other artifacts have been found here. Archaeologist seem to think this fort was used for ceremonial purposes.

Fort hill has 10 miles of well marked nature trails. The area is rich with many varieties of uncommon plants. Many interesting birds make their home in this area also.
