Marietta Mound

Ohio River & I-77, in Marietta, Ohio

This mound is located at 5th and 2nd streets at
the Mound Cemetery in Marietta, Ohio. It is a
conical mound, 30 feet around the perimeter of its
base, and is surrounded by a dry moat 4 feet deep
and 15 feet wide. This, in turn, is surrounded by
an earthen wall about 4 feet high and 20 feet wide.
The conical mound is an Adena mound.

A well preserved structure, The Great Mound has
prompted some writers to call it the most beautiful
of mounds. Since it may very well have been a burial
mound of a Chief, it seems fitting that the people
of Marietta surrounded the mound with a cemetery.
