Story Mound

Story Mound is a conical burial mound owned by the Ohio Historical Society and located on a track of fenced green space approximately 1 acre in size. The mound, excavated by Clarence Loveberry in 1897, was originally about 25’ (and now 19.5’) high and 95’ in diameter. The mound is of historic significance because it is similar in size and shape to the now obliterated Adena Mound. (Adena mound was located about 1 mile west of Story Mound on Adena the estate of Thomas Worthington, a prominent politician of early Ohio. The Adena Mound was destroyed in 1901, but it produced artifacts considered so truly representative of the mound builders of the region’s conical mounds that the name of the estate and mound came to be applied to the culture.)
