Zaleski State Forest
Zaleski Mound 1, also known as the Ranger Station Mound, is a conical feature that measures 14.4’ high and about 80-‘ in diameter. The mound is located in Zaleski State Forest, west of Zaleski Elementary School near the forest manager’s residence. The mound now has several large trees growing upon it. A driveway (State Forest Road 17) loops past the manager’s residence and the mound, which is identified with a sign. Another mound—a small circle—can be seen along the Zaleski State Forest Backtrail. This feature is not accessible by motor vehicle, and it lies about 6 miles from the trailhead.
Directions: from intersection of Ohio route 278 and 677 in Zaleski, follow route 278 N .3 mile, then go W at Zaleski Elementary Scholl for .2 miles into Zaleski State Forest (via state forest road 17) and mound 1. Parking is available near the mound. The trailhead for the Zaleski backpack trail is located alongside route 278 5 miles N of Zaleski. Parking is available at the trailhead.
