Notes for REUBEN HUNT:
General Information:
Reuben Hunt was born April 29, 1823, in Shutford, Oxfordshire County, England.
In 1846, at the age of 23, Reuben married Elizabeth Wrench who was 16, in Oxfordshire.
The marriage would produce ten children. Elizabeth first became pregnant at the age of 18.
The couple had three children while still in England,
Thomas (9/6/1849, b. Shutford), Walter Eugene (6/26/1851, b. Banbury), and Amelia Elizabeth (8/6/1853).
Reuben had to petition the local clergy to sail for America. Permission was needed to leave England at this time. The clergy would not sign Reuben's papers as he was "out of favor" with them, so he missed his scheduled ship which was blown of course in a storm and directed toward Australia and sank. The family was able to take the next ship out. In late 1853, with his wife (23) and three young children (4,2,0), Reuben (30) sailed for the United States. The family settled in Chenango County of New York state, the area where Elizabeth Wrench had been born when her father had moved from England to start a "plush" manufacturing trade. The Wrench family had been in the fine cloth and plush trade for generations around the London countryside.
Apparently still searching for a location to settle and to make a living as a stone mason, in March of 1857, Reuben (34) left the family in New York and set out for the relatively new Iowa village of Fayette. It is possible he had been called to Fayette as result of some past contact with a stone mason, or had heard about work available as, the seminary )College Hall), the first building for the new college was under construction out of native limestone. W.R. Hunt, Reuben's grandson would later state that Reuben worked on and eventually became the head stone mason near the end of completion of College Hall.
Upon arriving in the Fayette valley, Reuben purchased three acres of land, at the south end of Washington Street, and on the east side of the road that went up what was, and still is called College Hill, and proceeded to build a small frame house. The three acres was a strip of lots on the east side of the road south out of Fayette, bordered on the north by the present road to Wadena, and running into the base of College Hill (bz, 2000). One of his son's Reuben Wrench would end up living in a farm/house right into the base of the hill, and the original Hunt house would be about 150 feet south of the Wadena Road (just to north of the old train via duct). When the railroad came into Fayette in 1873, Reuben would lose a part of his land to the RR right away. However, by this time, he apparently began buying 40-50 acres of land to the east of the Hunt lots and the land on the SW top of present day College Hill. Reuben Wrench Hunt would own and farm this area by the late 1800's and into the 1900's, while his older brother would farm the area just to the SW of College Hill, after moving from the furniture/undertaking store on the corner of Water and Main Streets.
In September of 1857, five months after arriving, Elizabeth(27) and the three children (6,4 and 2) joined Reuben in Fayette.
Reuben immediately proceeded to start and rapidly complete a stone house build from native limestone, where the family would continue to live until Elizabeth's death in April of 1902, at which time Reuben, Senior would begin living with his children until his death in July of 1907.
Seven more children were born to the couple, apparently in the Hunt house, Washington (1856), Flora F. (probably 1858), Fannie S. (1/2/1860), Reuben Wrench (6/26/1865), William A. (2/1868), Jesse E. (1871, died in the first year), Lucy A. 1872).
Reuben (78) continued to live in his original limestone house until 1902. He apparently moved in with one of his sons within a year after Elizabeth's (71) death on April 6, 1901.
Reuben apparently worked as a skilled stone mason, brick layer and plaster most of his life in Fayette. Native limestone was his specialty. Like many early Fayette residents, Reuben and his family were members of the First Methodist Church. Reuben died February 9, 1907, and along with his wife of 55 years, are buried in lot 90, at Grandview Cemetery, which is on the southern hill overlooking the village of Fayette, Iowa.
The only personal tale we have was passed down from Reuben grandson's Walter Reuben Hunt, in which Reuben Sr., related that his father or grandfather had invented the safety pin but someone he knew copied it from him and rushed out and got a patent on the safety pin. The Hunts that we know were tinkerers.
Reuben Sr. and Elizabeth Wrench Hunt would live out their lives in the Fayette Valley, raising there family, dying and being buried there in Grandview. All but two of the children would leave the valley to settle generally in the western states as was the trend at the time. Walter Eugene Hunt and Reuben Wrench Hunt would remain in Fayette to raise their families. Only one other Hunt would remain in Fayette to raise a Family, Walter Eugene's son Walter Reuben. Walter Reuben's daughter Eleanor Hunt Zbornik (1919-1965) would be the last Hunt to remain in Fayette to raise a family. Walter Reuben (1887-1977) and Winnifred Mary Strayer Hunt would die in 1977 and be the last of the Hunt Clan in Fayette. After 120 years there would be no more Hunt's in the Fayette Valley.
---------------------------------------
Some insight into the life of Reuben Hunt Sr. and Elizabeth Wrench, and how the Hunt Family ended up in Fayette, Iowa, can be gained from a story by a son of Walter Eugene Hunt, John Samuel Hunt:
Rueben Hunt Sr., The Roots of the Hunt Clan, as remember by Grandson John Samuel Hunt, about 1950:
As a lad in England, Grandfather Reuben Hunt loved music. It lead him into many thrilling places bringing much joy to him and to others. At fifteen he belonged to a small-town orchestra that played at the Coronation of Queen Victoria. He was one of the many who came from near and far to honor the young queen. Strange uniforms proclaimed military rank from out of the way Provinces. A babble of tongues heralded men from other countries. Good will proclaimed, "All men are brothers." England was one grand pageant, and Reuben was part of it all, doing his bit for the glory of Olde England by paying homage to the Queen in music.
Reuben followed his father's trade in becoming a weaver. He did a full days work then relaxed in music and song He had congenial companions who liked to hear him sing. And many others liked to hear him sing. Some young lords, hearing his beautiful voice, invited him to their banquets to sing for them. In return they gave him wine, which he learned to like very much. In time this developed into an annoying thirst.
Come a Sunday Reuben went to hear one of his fellow weavers preach. He was Rev. Wrench, one of John Wesley's preachers. The pastor had a lovely daughter with a beautiful voice. She and Reuben used to sing together to the delight of their listeners. As they sang their hearts were knit together into an abiding love. They were married and in due time two sons and a daughter came to bless the home in Shutford, England.
Everything went well until the thirst for wine demanded satisfaction. Ale from the Grog shop seemed to quench the craving for wine. Jolly weaver friends encourage him to stop for a drop of ale or gin. The men enjoyed the company of a good singer. They all liked to drink together. As time went on it kept taking longer and longer to get home on pay day with less and less to take care of the needs of his growing family. Suddenly Reuben realized he had scarcely enough left to meet the growing demand.
Because Grandfather was very much in love with his wife, Elizabeth, he decided to do something about the situation. First he and Elizabeth talked quietly about the problem. They agreed a change must be made. But how? It was hard to break with his jolly companions. Reuben mused, "I like them all but I do not love them as I do you and the children." Elizabeth murmured, "Perhaps we might go somewhere else." (But there was no old Ford to pile the family in and go to California)
Suddenly Reuben remembered something he had heard the boys discussing sometime ago. One of the boys was telling about a cousin of his who has a government grant to take his family to Australia. It seems that we have too many people on this small island, so the government is arranging for young men to go to the colonies to make new homes. The cost of the trip is financed by the government. It will continue the support until the family is established in the new home. "Perhaps we might join that group." "Let's try it," volunteered Elizabeth. "It will do no harm to write for information." The suggestion was followed by action and soon papers arrived telling all about the new world open to young families.
Application blanks came with information of the new land. As Reuben studied the openings for men, grandfather learned that there were more openings for stone masons than weavers, so he thought it best to change his trade. He looked around for masons and apprenticed himself to the best firm he could find. He went to work with a will and mastered the new trade. This done, they began to fill out the application blanks. Finally everything was finished except the recommendation from his pastor which was required. Since he had quarreled with his pastor, grandfather was ashamed to ask for such a courtesy. He was released from that predicament in an unexpected way. A letter came saying Elizabeth's Father had died leaving her considerable money. Again they had a conference. They began a new study. The question now was, did they have enough to go to America on their own instead of going to the Colonies in Australia as planned. If they went to America, grandfather would not need a recommendation from any pastor. Can you imagine the excitement as they studied the plans for a change in directions.
Then came a new question. Where shall we go in America? At once Elizabeth said, "Let's go to New Berlin, N.Y. That is where I was born. Father went there to teach the New Yorker's how to make plush. He thought the air was too dry to make it right so after a year he returned to England. We returned soon after I was born." Reuben like the idea so it was not long before the family reached their new home in America
When grandfather learned there were better opportunities for a mason in the middle west than in New York he moved his family to Fayette, Iowa, where they made a permanent home. Here Rueben entered into the life of the town, making fiends and taking part in civic projects. Here he completed his studies to become a U.S. Citizen. On October 26, 1868, at West Union, county seat of Fayette County, Iowa, he was given his final papers to make him a United States Citizen.
Coming to America did not remove the appetite for liquor, but it did give a better chance to fight it. New environment, new friends and a new trade so filled his day that there was not much time to think of his own desires. The little family increased until there were five sons and three daughters. That was enough to keep any man busy.
Once when work was scarce in Fayette, Grandfather went to Ames where the Iowa State College buildings were being built of brick. When he reached Ames he went to the boss and asked if any brick-layer was needed. At a curt "NO" grandfather turned and started to walk away, when a bystander said, "Do you know who that is?" "No", aid the boss, "who is he"? "That is Reuben Hunt", said the bystander, "he is the best brick layer in the country." At that the boss called him back and put him on the pay roll. From then on he remained on the job until the buildings were finished. According to Cousin John, Grandfather did better work and laid twice as many bricks in a day than a union brick layer is allowed to lay today. His secret? He made every move count. There were no false starts. He was quick and sure.
After coming to America grandfather and grandmother seldom sang together. They felt there must be something evil in the wonderful voice since it led him to companions who encouraged him to form habits that made him a slave. Altho he loved to sing, he was willing to forego the pleasure in order to regain the mastery over himself.
It took the grandchildren to get them to sing together again. After all the years their voices remained clear and true. those who listened were charmed and sensed the abiding love that knit their hearts together, keeping them warm thru all the years of adversity and growth, revealing to us, their descendants, that "Love is Eternal." John Hunt, son of Walter Eugene Hunt, grandson of Reuben Sr. Abt. 1950.

Notes for THOMAS VINCENT HUNT:
Obit---Death of Thomas Hunt, Occurred Sunday Afternoon, September 11, 1904, at 6 P.M., at the home of Mrs. Strong, after a long illness. Thomas Hunt was born in Shutford, England, September 6, 1849, and came to the United States in 1854, the family settling in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, where they resided for five years and then came to Fayette. the subject of this sketch resided here till 1866. Since that time he has been engaged in teaching in Independence, Delhi, Postville, and Hopkinson, returning to Delhi, in which place he was teaching when taken ill. He was married to Miss Grace Strong in Fayette, October 17, 1875, and to them were born a son and three daughters, all of whom morn the loss of husband and father. Mr. Hunt was an enthusiastic instructor, always having the interests of his pupils at heart, always solicitous for the welfare of young people. It was his ambition to teach for a quarter of a century, but he was taken sick on the opening day of the spring term of this year (1904), and was obliged to realize, to his great grief that his cherished ambition must go ungratified. His limit of endurance was reached after 23 years of endeavor. He became a member of the Methodist church over 30 years ago, and was prominent in its work, being most of the time in some official position, besides being president of Epworth Sunday school much of the time. During his five months of sickness, which was marked by almost unendurable pain, from which the most powerful opiates afforded only temporary relief, those nearest him were touched by his unfailing courage and patient endurance. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Tuesday at 1:30., Rev. Cattermole conducting the service, assisted by Rev. Reen, of Delhi, Dr. Fleming, and Rev. J.L. Paine. The music was in charge of Mrs. J. W. McLean. Floral offering were very numerous, among them being a harp sent by the Delhi High School, a sickle by the young ladies bible and Sunday school class, and a profusion of cut flowers from many friends. The casket was covered with a beautiful emblem in white flowers from the Delhi Epworth League. The interment was made in Grandview cemetery in Fayette where his mother was buried years ago.
Obit---Prof. T. V. Hunt Dead---Thomas Vincent Hunt, son of Reuben Hunt and Eliazbeth Wrench Hunt was born in Shutford , Oxfordshire County, England, September 6, 1849, and died at Fayette, Iowa, Sunday, September 11, 1904, age 55 years, 5 days. When but five years old he came with his family to Chenango County, New York State. After about five years the family moved to Fayette where he grew to stalwart manhood. Working with his father Reuben, he became a master stone mason and stone cutter, which vocation he never fully laid aside. He was a graduate of Upper Iowa University in Fayette. His home was in Fayette until 1886, and at age 37 he moved to Independence, where he taught three years, to Postville four years, to Hopkinton four years, then to Delhi again three years, then back to Fayette to pass over the river from amid associations of his youth. He was converted at the age of 19 years. He was married October 17, 1875, to Miss Grace C. Strong, who with four children---Alice, Arthur, Harriet and Helen---besides a venerable father, four brothers and three sisters survive him. he has not been able to leave his bed since April 7th last, and only those who cared for him know how intense was his suffering or how patiently it was endured. The funeral was help from the Fayette methodist church last week Tuesday, five pastors assisting in the service. Floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Postville friends will sympathize with the bereaved family in the loss of one whom they knew as a kind husband and father, a devout Christian and a loyal citizen.---The Fayette Reporter.

Notes for WALTER EUGENE HUNT:
Article from the Fayette Reporter, July 8, 1904---Improvements on the W. E. Hunt Place---Walter Eugene Hunt has been treating the house and new barn with a coat of paint. W. E. thought white would look well on the house but his women folk thought that something else would look better. As Walter was afraid of the women around the house he retreated to the barn where he was not afraid of the largest woman there ever was. When there he said, "You can paint your old house any color you want to, but the barn shall be white." That accounts for the house being two shades of green and the barn white. So don't bother Walter any more by asking him why he painted the barn white. To lay joking aside Walt has as good a farm as you will find in this part of Iowa. The basement of the barn is an ideal place for handling milk cows. It is well ventilated and lighted, has plastered walls and cement floors. It is also fitted up with patient stalls in which each cow is comfortable as though she had the run of the entire barn. Walt says that makes his neck ache to see his cows stand in a stanchion. Another new thing is his cream room which is positioned off in one corner. It is well ventilated and furnished with a U-Cream Separator and tread power to run it, both purchased from Swartz Bros. But one more thing needs to make the White Barn and Dairy complete, that is a silo, which Mr. Hunt intends to add soon. Twelve years ago when he sold out the furniture business many people thought that he had made a mistake, but he has proved himself to be a business man in store and on the farm. he says that any one can do well farming if they keep Holstein cattle.
59th Wedding Anniversary---From the Cedar Rapids gazette, Nov 2, 1937---From Fayette, Iowa---The fifty-ninth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hunt was observed Sunday in the home of his brother, Reuben Wrench Hunt. The hours for the open house are from 2:30 till 5 in the afternoon and 7:30 till 9:30 in the evening. It is hoped that you make note of this date and join this party honoring this estimable couple. Mr. Hunt was born near Banbury, England, June 6, 1851, and with his parents came to the United States when he was three years of age. At the age of six the family came to Iowa from New York State. Oct. 31, 1878, he married Amanda Thompson, who was born Sept 13, 1856, near Grannis Hollow, four miles southeast of Fayette. Eighteen years of their married life were spent in Fayette while Mr. Hunt engaged in the furniture and undertaking business on the northwest corner of Main and Water Streets, from 1878 to 1896. In 1896, after failing health they decided to sell the business and move to a farm one mile southwest of the cemetery, or one half mile north of the road leading to the old Wilcox place, the first cabin in Fayette County (1840), and on the west side of the road. The Hunt's occupied this farm from 1896 to 1920, when they again became residents of Fayette and moved back into town to the house on the northeast corner of Main and Seventh Streets, which is at the south end of Main. Mr. and Mrs. Hunt have been active in affairs of the Methodist Church, which Mr. Hunt contributing much labor on the remodeling of the church a few years ago. They are also greatly interested in Masonic and Eastern Star Activities.
Notes from a "Hunt Clan Newsletter"---Uncle Walter E. Hunt married Amanda Thompson and they settled in Fayette. he had a furniture store for 15 years, then went out on a farm until he retired to a home in Fayette. Even after retiring he had a work shop where he built many things from old tree stumps, etc., doing all the work himself. They had five children Flora, John, Reuben, Nellie and Martha.\
MEMOIRS of Walter Eugene Hunt written in the late 1990's by Russell W. Baker, grandson of Reuben Wrench Hunt, Walter's brother---Walter Eugen Hunt was my grandfather's brother. I knew of him as far back as I can remember. My Mother who was Reuben Wrench Hunt's daughter always referred to him as Uncle Walter, so that is all I ever knew him by. I was raised on a farm three miles south of Farley, Iowa, which was sixty miles south and east of Fayette, so my path did not cross with Uncle Walter that often, but my folks who both graduated from UIU in Fayette, always went to Fayette for the college graduation ceremony each spring so on such an occasion we would hear Grandma and Grandpa Hunt and Aunt Jean who was my Mother's sister refer to Uncle Walter and Aunt Amanda as well as Reuben and Winne Hunt, Reuben being Walter's son.
Though he had closed his store before I was old enough to remember, for many years Uncle Walter had a furniture store including a hardware section and undertaking service, on the northwest corner of Main and Water Streets of Fayette. Also I remember being told he had been a member of the Masonic Lodge longer than anyone else in Iowa. One of his hobbies after he retired was working with wood. He made each of his Neice jewelry boxes in the shape of miniature chests of drawers. They were made from wood of an old cherry tree that he cut down in his back yard.
The fall of 1938, I enrolled at UIU and as I recall it was come time during 1939 that a 50th Anniversary celebration was put together by Aunt Jean and several others of the family for Aunt Amanda and Uncle Walter. There were a lot of relatives who came to Fayette. To name a few Uncle Roy Hunt, his son Allen both from Baker, Oregan. Roy's son Fred who worked for Dupont came from Tennessee, a widow of Uncle Walter's brother came from Louisiana, Walter's son John from Los Angeles, California, daughter Flora from Colorado and daughter Martha who lived at home, Uncle Walter's sister Lucy from Des Moines, Iowa and her two daughters and son from the Des Moines area, my folks and brother and many cousins and relatives from the Fayette area.
In 1941, I was drafted into the Army and so left the Fayette area except for visits. Aunt Jean told of a reunion that Uncle Roy had in 1948 at his ranch near Keating, Oregan, just east of Baker. Walter Reuben Hunt took Aunt Amanda, Uncle Walter, Grandma Laura Hunt, and Grandpa Rueben Hunt to the reunion. Apparently they all had a great time visiting and playing pool from what she said.
Both Aunt Amanda and Uncle Walter passed away after I left Fayette and since I had settled north of Seattle, Washington, we did not make it back to either of their funerals.

10. AMELIA ELIZABETH5 HUNT (REUBEN4, JOHN3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1)1 was born August 06, 1853 in Shutford, Oxfordshire, England, and died April 19, 1932 in Sioux Falls, SD. She married FRANK EUGENE VAN DEMARK March 01, 1878 in Fayette, Iowa, son of HENRY VAN DE MARK and MARY ADAMS. He was born October 08, 1851 in Lake County, Waukegan, IL, and died February 12, 1931 in Hartford, SD.
Notes for AMELIA ELIZABETH HUNT:
Amelia Elizabeth Hunt was born August 6, 1853, in Shutford, County Oxfordshire, England, of Reuben, Sr., and Elizabeth Wrench Hunt. When six months old, in early 1854, she sailed for America with her parents and two older brothers, Thomas Vincent and Walter Eugene. The Hunt family settled in Chenango Co., the Finger Lake Region of New York State in the summer of 1854. Reuben was a stone mason and cutter. In early 1857, Reuben went to Fayette, in northeast Iowa. The Fayette valley had only been occupied by white settlers about ten years, and Fayette itself since about 1852. The population of the entire valley was a couple of hundred white settlers, including the Village of Westfield along the Volga River, about a 1 1/2 miles from where the Hunts would build a home. Robert Alexander and his brother-in-law, James E. Robertson came to the area in the late 1840's and had through land movement made a small fortune. Desiring a place to educate her daughters, Eliz Alexander encourage the building of a college. The Failes but up funds to start a college building of limestone in 1855 on top of the knoll in Fayette donated by James Roberston. At the same time James Roberston would plat the Town of Fayette and begin selling lots. It is probable that Reuben had come to Fayette in 1857 as a stone mason on the college building, as he finished as a master stone mason on the project. Reuben built a small one room stone house and moved the family to Fayette in the summer of 1857. Rooms would be added to the house and the family would continue to live in the house until grown.
Ten children would be born to Reuben and Elizabeth Hunt, with two dying young. Apparently Amelia continued to live with her parents in Fayette until at the age of 25, she married Frank E. Van De Mark (about 28) at Fayette on March 1, 1878. Information has been extrapolated from family photos and several newspaper clippings. Frank had come to Iowa, probably to Fayette with his parents, at the age of 12 from Lake County, Illinois, where he was born, October 8, 1851. He was educated in Illinois and Iowa, and perhaps attended Fayette schools and UIU, as did Amelia.
In 1863, at the age of 21, Frank E. Van De Mark made the journey completely across northern Iowa, driving a team of oxen, with no wagon, and only a few possessions strapped on. He made the journey entirely on foot. Arriving in what would be the Hartford area, which is about fifteen miles west and a little north of Sioux Falls, SD. This was the still the land of the Sioux and very much the frontier with all its dangers. Frank would lay claim and make improvements on a land just to the east of what would become Hartford. He was a true pioneer in the area and would eventually end up with well over a section of land around the eastern and northern perimeter of Hartford, of which he would buy and sell property. He also would plot and own the Van De Mark addition to Hartford. By 1877 Frank was apparently established and his parents would join him in the Hartford area, which of course was still in the frontier west. In the 1910 Hartford only had a population of 800, but was the county seat and had three churches, two banks, a flour mill, three grain elevators and was on a major railroad for livestock and grain shipping east.
Apparently Frank knew the Hunts of Fayette, Iowa, as Frank would marry Amelia Elizabeth Hunt, March 1, 1878 in Fayette and the couple would then return to the farm in Hartford. Two of Amelia's brothers, Washington and William would move to Hartford for quite sometime and either work with or for Frank. Reuben Wrench Hunt would spend about six years in Hartford as their butter maker. Frank and Amelia would have nine children, two of which would die in infancy. Fred Lewis Van De Mark 11/26/1878, would die in infancy; Guy Ernest 10/4/1870, attended Northwestern Medical School in Chicago and became a doctor in Sioux Falls; Walter Eugene 1/1/1881, would become a State Senator and die young in 1916; Blanch E. 7/13/1884,(Mrs. R. L. Atkinson) would be in Sturgis in 1933; Frank E., Jr., 9/10/1887, would be in Cut Bank Montana in 1933; Henry E., 4/23/1889, remained in Hartford and probably farmed; Martin E., 3/2/1892, was in Miles City, Montana in 1933; Ruth Evelyn, 11/05/1893-1923, married a Kochler and remained around Hartford; Arthur, 2/10/1894, died in infancy. Frank raised grain crops suited for the climate, but would become very well known for breeding purebred livestock, including registered shorthorn cattle, Poland-China swine, Shropshire sheep and Barred Plymouth Rock chickens. By the early 1900's his farm was devoting its entire production to pure bred stock. His farm had close proximity to the railroad depot and town. Frank would pass away before Amelia's death of pneumonia after a three weeks of hospitalization in Hartford in 1933, at the age of nearly 80. Frank and Amelia Hunt Van De Mark are buried in Hartford, South Dakota.

Mrs. Van de Mark had been confined to the hospital for the past three weeks. She was born in Shutford, near Banbury, Oxfordshire County, England, on August 6, 1853. When a child of six months, she was brought by her parents to New York state and resided there for three years. At the age of three years, the family moved to Fayette, Iowa, where their home was made. On March 1, 1878, she was united in marriage to Frank E. Van de Mark at Fayette. Shortly afterwards Mr. and Mrs. Van de Mark took up residence on a homestead three miles north of Hartford, SD. They lived there until 1900, when they moved into Hartford, where they have lived since. Mrs. Van de Mark was preceded in death by her husband in February, 1931. There were nine children: Dr. Guy E. FRANK E. VAN DE MARK, who is the owner of a fine landed estate of
six hundred and forty acres, in Hartford and Grand Meadow townships,
Minnehaha county, was born in Lake county, Illinois, on the 8th of
October, 1851 being a son of Henry A. and Mary (Adams) Van De Mark, who
came to the territory of Dakota in 1877, the father dying here in 1887,
at the age of sixty-six years, while his wife passed away in 1902, at
the venerable age of ninety years. The subject of this sketch secured
his early education in the public schools of Illinois and Iowa, to which
latter state his parents removed when he was twelve years old, and after
coming to South Dakota he supplemented the discipline by a course of
study in a business college in Sioux Falls. In 1872, when twenty-one
years of age, he left his home in Iowa and started for Dakota, making
the trip principally on foot and driving a yoke of oxen, which
represented his worldly possessions, since he did not have even a wagon.
He took up the southeast quarter of section 29, Grand Meadow township,
as a pre-emption, proving up on it and developing the property into a
good farm, of which he disposed in 1876. He is thus one of the pioneers
of Minnehaha county. Part of his present fine estate lies in sections 3,
4 and 10, Hartford township, and comprises six hundred and forty acres,
as before noted, while it is one of the best stock farms in this
section. The place on which he resides comprises seventy-three and a
half acres and lies in section 22, Hartford township, just east of the
city limits. and contains his fine home and buildings. He also plotted
and owns the Van De Mark addition to Hartford. In addition to raising
the various cereals best adapted to the soil and climate, he gives
special attention to the raising of the finest grade of live stock,
including registered shorthorn cattle, Poland-China swine and Shropshire
sheep, and at the present time he is devoting practically his entire
attention to the fancy stock business, of which he has developed more
than any other breeder in the state. Of his place and its attractions a
leading stock journal has spoken as follows:
We feel compelled, through the merits of the case, to direct the
attention of our stockmen to what is being done in their line by F. E.
Van De Mark, of Hartford, South Dakota. Located in the immediate
vicinity of a town, with splendid natural conditions and excellent
accommodations for all kinds of stock, his farm furnishes most that
could be desired for the successful breeding of pure-bred stock. While
short-horn cattle; Shropshire sheep and Barred Plymouth Rock chickens
are respectively represented by a number of the very best specimens, we
wish to make particular mention of the Poland-China herd, having at its
head Van Dee 69449, sired by the sweepstakes hog at the state fair of
1902. Viola Over 160780, who won sweepstakes at Yankton, is a sow of
splendid proportions and her points of excellence are away in the
majority. Paulina 174762, bred by Rockwell Brothers, of Iowa, is also a
nicely turned and vigorous-looking animal Other young sows, as Dakota
and Iowa, show clearly that Mr. Van De Mark is on the right track and is
more than an amateur in the business. The close proximity to the depot
and town and the quality and variety of stock kept, should induce any
lover of good stock to stop off at Hartford and give Mr. Van De Mark a
call.
In politics Mr. Van De Mark is a staunch Republican, and he is now
serving as justice of the peace and also as treasurer of the Hartford
school fund, while in 1898 he received the nomination for representative
in the state legislature, but met defeat with the rest of the party
ticket in the state. He and his wife are prominent and valued members of
the Methodist Episcopal church in Hartford, and fraternally he is
identified with the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
On the 1st of March, 1878, in Fayette county, Iowa, Mr. Van De
Mark was united in marriage to Miss Amelia E. Hunt, who was born in
England, whence she came with her parents to America in her childhood.
The subject and his wife are the parents of seven children, namely: Guy
E., who is attending the Northwestern Medical College, in Chicago;
Walter E., who is a graduate of the university at Mitchell and who was
principal of the East Sioux Falls public schools in 1902; and Blanch E.,
Frank E., Jr., Henry E., Martin E., and Ruth E., who remain at the
parental home.

Notes for WALTER EUGENE VAN DEMARK:
Newspaper Article 1916---Esteemed citizen is laid to rest---Funeral of Senator Walter Van de Mark held Saturday---Was largely attended---Go. Byrne and other officials come on special train from Mitchell---Filling the large auditorium of the Methodist church to overflowing, with the church basement also filled with those who could find no room above, probably the largest gathering ever assembled in this city (Hartford, SD) to pay the last tribute of loving esteem to a departing friend and neighbor, was present at Saturday to attend the funeral of the late Senator Walter Van de Mark, the hour for the funeral was fixed at two in the afternoon, but long before that time the Chruch was filled, with the exception of seats reserved for relatives, the delegations from Mitchell and other places, who arrived on the special train, and the members of fraternal organizations of which the deceased man was a member. The special train brought nearly one hundred members of the Mitchell lodge Elks, Masons and Governor Byrne and other officials, with a number of members of the last legislature, which Mr. Van de Mark was a member. The remains were conveyed from the Masonic hall to the Methodist-Episcopal church under Masonic covert, and the elks, Odd Fellow, Western Woodmen and Eastern Star organizations were also represented members of those orders. The elks double quartette of Mitchel rendered beautiful musical selections and C. E. Lovinger, a member of the quartette, sang a solo.
Governor Frank M. Byrne reflected a short time upon Senator Van de Mark's public life, paying a beautiful tribute to the honesty of purpose of the deceased man, and making the statement that he always stood for his convictions if he thought he was right. Gov Byrne's sincerity was apparent through his talk relating to Mr. Van de Marks's ability in the state senate. Hon. E. E. Wagner of Sioux Falls, who had been intimately associated with Mr. Van de Mark in a business way for several years, spoke most highly of the deceased. As a friend and business partner Mr. Wagner had become intimately acquainted with Mr. Van de Mark, and his tribute was expressed in words which came direct from the heart. It was exceedingly difficult for Mr. Wagner to speak, as he was grief stricken because of the sad incident, and plainly showed the strain which he was under. Rev. Redfield of Tripp, who for several years had been pastor of the Methodist church at Hartford, the boyhood home of the deceased man, then delivered the funeral sermon. From an intimate association with the family Rev. Redfield knew the deceased well, and his remarks were appropriate and were expressive of the sincere regard for which he had for Mr. Van de Mark. he spoke words of comfort and cheer to the bereaved ones, and paid eloquent tribute to the departed.
At the conclusion of the sermon a portion of the Masonic burial rites were read at the church, owing to the extreme cold weather, and the remains were then borne to Green Hill cemetery and laid to rest, the body bearers being E. E. Wagner, John Momsen, R. B McCandless, Walter Slade, H. L. Taylor and H. H. Stuart. and thus the final chapter in the mortal book of Mr. Van de Mark's life was marked "finis." At rest in the casket, banked by a wonderful profusion of lowers, amid the presence of a large concourse of warm friends to whom he could not give his customary cheery greeting, the final words were spoken that showed the mortality of man---the uncertainty of life. The memory of the final services, which testified a small extent the deep respect in which Mr. Van de Mark was held by his neighbors, friends and associates, will ever bring some ray of comfort to the sorrowing ones. The closed doors and drawn curtains of the business houses of the city during the time of the funeral indicated that there was a realization of the community's loss when this man was stricken in the prime of his life, and the business associates of his home city were not negligent in paying respectful tribute to his memory.
The relatives and friends from out of town who came to attend Mr. Van de Mark's funeral were his parents Frank E. and Amelia Hunt Van de Mark, and his sister Miss Ruth Van de Mark, of Hartford; three brothers, Dr. Guy E. Van de Mark of Sioux Falls; Martin of Helena, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Van de Mark of Hartford; Stephen Van de Mark of Spencer, Iowa; Joseph Van de Mark of Hartford; Robert Atkinson of Hartford; Rev. Samuel Marble of Hitchcock and Mrs. O.S. McGavern of Mitchell, brother and sister of Mrs. Van de Mark; Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Rowen of Parker, cousins of Mrs. Van de Mark; Rev. Graff, pastor of the M.E. church at Hartford, F. E. Van de Mark, Jr., another brother who resides in Montana, could not be present. A large number of state officials and legislative members were present at the funeral.

Notes for REUBEN WRENCH HUNT:
MEMOIRS of Reuben Wrench Hunt, by Russel W. Baker, son of Eva Elizabeth Hunt Baker and Harold I. Baker, written in the late 1990's---Reuben Wrench Hunt was my Mother's father. My first recollection of him was at his house in Fayette, Iowa, over Christmas. I lived on a farm about sixty miles south and east of Fayette, three miles south of Farley, Iowa. My father had a dairy herd and quite a lot of other live stock so that he had to take care of so he was not able to get away from the farm any length of time. He would take my Mother, younger brother and me to Delaware, Iowa, where we would catch the train that went into Fayette county. Usually we would go in the middle of the week and then my Father would come get us either that weekend or the next depending on how long Mother planned to stay in Fayette.
As I first remember Grandpa Hunt, he was working in Fayette as a butter maker at the creamery, which was as the far south end of Mechanics Street, near the train depot. We had gone up to Fayette to be there over Christmas, this must have been before I was in school, perhaps in the early to mid 1920's, as we were there several days. I remember Grandpa Hunt bringing out a basket filled with wrapped gifts on Christmas Eve.
As I grew older our visits to his house were for special occasions such as birthdays etc. My folks both had graduated from Upper Iowa so we did go to Fayette every spring for graduation exercises and visited Grandpa's while we were there. While I was still in grade school the creamery in Fayette closed down and Grandpa went to work for a grocery store.
Grandpa lived on the south side of Fayette on a small farm just below College hill, in a two story brick house that he moved into and fixed up. The first house north of the railroad viaduct on the east side of the road. He raised enough crops to keep one or two cows which he milked for their own use. The rest of his land he rented out on shares. Every year he planted a large garden just north of their house. The first two rows on the east end were gladiolas and dahlias, and without fail then came sweet corn, potatoes, beans, peas, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, lettuce, radishes and cabbage. He was good enough of a gardener that their cellar was full come fall and they had plenty to carry them thru the winter. hew always had gold fish in his stock water tank. On the side hill near the back door of the house was always beds of flowers.
Grandmother Laura some time before I can remember had a stroke. My memory of her was that she was not able to do a great deal around the house but was able to be up and around and take care of herself. She very much enjoyed the flowers throughout the spring and summer. She would sit in her chair by the window where she could see the garden, flowers and the birds. My Mother's sister Jean stayed at home and took care of the house and Grandma Laura.
In 1938, I enrolled in Upper Iowa and stayed at a house north of the campus and had lunch and dinner with Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Jean. by then Grandpa was doing light carpenter work, painting and wall papering. On weekends I would go with him to help. I was there for my freshman and sophomore years. The following year I worked on a construction gang the first half of the year, going back to UIU in January. The next summer I had to sign up for the draft and was called in October (of 1941). Sometime after I went into the army, Grandpa sold his farm and moved into a house north of the campus where they lived until they passed away. By the time they moved into town he was retired and spent all of his time in his garden and with his flowers.

Notes for JOHN SAMUEL HUNT:
Hunt Clan Newsletter 1970---A memorial to a Dear Friend and Cousin (Dorothy Vondersaar-Editor)---The song "Big John" to me is our John as he was a big success in whatever he undertook, and he tried nearly everything. For those whomever knew him here is an idea of the full, useful and colorful life that he led. He left home at age 17 and rode the freight train to Chicago where he held several jobs, this started his travels which carried him across the country. he worked in a furniture store, home steaded in Colorado, worked as a cowboy in Montana, was a Licensed Embalmer. he graduated from Hurds Business College in Fayette, was a garage mechanic in Bolder, Colorado and Kansas City. he was a bookkeeper for a diary and drove a truck for a mining company in Colorado. He did construction work in Casper, Wyoming. After moving to California, he worked in a bank and was in the men's clothing business. He also was a dabbler in stocks and bonds. He retired from the clothing business in 1949. After retiring he spent most of his time traveling around the country. he would go back to Fayette, Iowa, to help his brother with harvest, haying, etc. he missed very few reunions if any, and was always there ready to do his bit, be it cooking, dishes, making beds, dancing, telling stories, etc., he was always in there pitching. He co-hosted several of the reunions at the Black Hills. John was with several of their projects and when there was nothing better to do he would chop wood, just the keep in shape. He loved swimming, especially in the ocean. Even as a male nurse he was a success. he helped his sister Flora with the Doctor when he was so sick before he died. Also when Aunt Lucy was bed ridden he went back and was Elizabeth's right hand up until the end. I have only scratched the surface in the many ways that he helped his relatives and friends, but to those who did not know him, it will maybe show you a little of what a wonderful guy he was and bring back a memory or two to those who knew and loved him. John leaves one son, John Douglas Hunt, who lives with his wife Nellie and their two children, Steve and Lee Ann Sue (Susie) at Downey, California.

Notes for ROBERT LEE ATKINSON:
Information Notes: Robert Lee Atkinson in 1951 was tall, bald headed and a spry man of 81. He was known as the Barber around Sioux valley Hospital. He was brought up on a farm with his two brothers, Archie and Charlie. He attended Dakota Wesleyan College at Mitchell, S.D. had a claim in Western S. D. Was a banker at Hartford, Watertown, Elrod and Walsey. he farmed at Sturgis and was an implement dealer in Iowa. he now resides with his wife Blanche in Sioux Falls where they own and operate an apartment house. he is still a farmer at heart, and in his back yard he raises the biggest, juiciest tomatoes, best corn and biggest string beans in town. He has always been active in Church work and was largely responsible for getting the Presbyterian Chruch built in Walsey. He believes in the very early to bed and early to rise philosophy and keeps Blanche from being too much of a night owl. He lays his good health and long life to plenty of sleep, exercise and good healthy food. he puts honey in everything, except his coffee. To sum it all up, he is quite a character.
