the Neuenswchwander
connection
to Fayette County, Iowa
ohn Neuenschwander and Cilivia Harmon moved from Ohio, and settled in the pioneer village of Elgin, Fayette County, in Northeastern Iowa, in the early 1860's. John had immigrated to America from the Bern area of Switzerland in about 1848. John apparently had worked with Cilivia's brother Joseph as carriage/wagon maker in Monroe County, Ohio, as John remained in this profession until about 1895, when moved to a farm just to the west of Fayette, Iowa (index page of some Fayette Photo Albums). John, his first wife Civilia, and second wife Elizabeth are buried in the Elgin Cemetery. Several of John's children farmed in the Fayette, Randalia, Hawkeye area, while other parts of the family remained around Elgin. Two generation's later, much of the family had moved west, into the Cedar Rapids area, and dispersing to other parts of the country which was typical of pioneer families.

2. John2 Neuenschwander (Ulrich N.1) was born November 1832 in Langnau, Im Emmental Bern Switerzerland, and died August 08, 1910 in Westfield Twp., Fayette Co., Iowa. He married (1) Cilivia Harmon, daughter of Samuel Harman and Mary Gates. She was born 1841 in Ohio, and died March 26, 1878 in Elgin, Fayette Co., Iowa. He married (2) Elizabeth Mathys April 22, 1884 in Elgin, Fayette Co., Iowa, daughter of Benedict Mathys and Elizabeth Laddr. She was born May 1861 in Clayton Co., Iowa, and died 1932 in Fayette.
Notes for John Neuenschwander:
Note from Mariana Zuelsdorf, 11/1998, included information written by Gerald Schori, spouse of Ella Neuenschwander Schori---"John Neuenschwander, son of Ulrich R., lived at the Easley farm across the river from New Martinsville, at Duffy, Monroe County, Ohio, on the very top of the hill. He met and married Sevilla Harman, who lived in New Martinsville. Later, packing her and her square piano, he moved to Elgin, Iowa, where he was a carriage and wagon maker. Later, Joseph Harman came to Iowa to visit his sister, Sevilla, and met Mary Bauder who was living with her sister and husband, Ben Schoir and his wife elizabeth. After Joseph returned to new martinsville, he realized he was smitten by Mary and wrote his brother-in-law, John, asking John to plight his troth on his behalf with Ben Schori regarding the possibility of his marriage to Mary Bauder. Ben discusssed it with his wife elizatbeth, who discussed it with sister Mary and it was agreed."
Mariana adds---She does not think Sevilla (Civilia) and her brother, Joseph, were in New Martinsville; they were probably living in Duffy at the time, in Monroe County, Ohio. The cemetery were Mary and Joseph are buried was probably on the Easley farm. The name of the hill where John lived is called Frye Hill. Joseph was also a wagon maker, so John Neuenschwander and his wife Civiali's brother Joseph, may have worked together as carriage/wagon makers in Ohio.

Census Information acquired from the Fayette County Iowa Historical, in West Union, 1990, bz.
1870 Census---John Neuenschwander, 38 and Cecilia Harmon Neuenschwander, 29 are living in Elgin, Pleasant Valley Twp., Fayette Co., Iowa. He is a wagon maker that immigrated from Switzerland. Children living in the household in 1870 are; William E., 6, George R., 3, Ida May, 1. He was taxed on personal property of $800 and real estate of $1500.
1880 Census---The census indicates John's wife Cecilia ( spelling is Sevilla in records of other family genealogists, as of 2000; bz) Harmon had died before 1872 as the youngest child "Ellen" in the household shows as 8yrs. The family was still in Elgin and shows only John and four children; John, 47, William E., 16, George R., 13, Ida May, 11, Ellen, 8. (Note: the marker for Sevilla in the Elgin Cemetery, immediately on the right of John Neuenschwander's marker, says Mother Civilia, 1841-1878, so there are three spellings being used, Sevilla by family genealogists, Cecilia in the Fayette County census notes, and Cevilia on the marker stone; bz).
1885 Census---John apparently had remarried to Elizabeth Mathys sometime around 1884, at they had a newly born infant on this date. The household shows; John 52 and his wife Elizabeth 23, George R., 18, Ida May, 15, Ellen 13, and new son Aurther, 0. William E. was now 21, had apparently moved out of the household, although his name does not show up on the 1885 census as head of a household.

The 1895 Census shows William, 30, stayed in Elgin, with Mary, 26, Sidney, 6, Percy, 4, Russel, 2, May Ella, 0. George, 28, and Anna, 24, show as a household in Elgin, with George being in manufacturing, probably as a wagon maker like his father John. Ida May, 25, were gone from John's household by 1895. Two more children had been born, the youngest was a new born in 1895; John was 62, Elizabeth, 33, Ellen (or Luella), 23, Aurther, 10, Levi G., 8, John, 0. John and Elizabeth would have their last child by the 1900 census.

Hazel would be the last child, John was 65 when she was born, Elizabeth 36. The other children are on their own; William, 36, George R., 33, Ida May, 28.
