Notes from Erikia (Ricky) Elkins (2/2/2001/z):
E-mail Address): mainepet@email.msn.com
Notes:
Nathan Parsons was gggrandfather, and brother to David Parsons. Erika (Ricky Elkins)
Jeremiah Parsons, Jr. married Mary Miller and had 8 children of which 5 seem
to be known:
Nathan Miller (m/Sarah Moore and a Mary ?)
Jeremiah M. m/ Lucinda Lane
Temperance M. m/ Charles Harrison Hoit
David Gilson m Adelia Butler
Russell A. m/?
From a doc. submitted to the DAR Jeremiah and Mary were married in Sag
Harbor Presbyterian Church (on Long Island, NY) on Feb. 23, 1800. Although
Familysearch.com shows them marrying in Fayette, Iowa on Feb. 24th 1800.
I'm assuming it's Sag Harbor as both were born on Long Island and all the
family histories of both families and parents are rooted there. From here
you really need to find the following books:
History of East Hampton by J.E. Rattray
and Frederick Gregory Mathers' "1776 Refugees of Long Island and
Connecticut". The family history just does not end.
I finally broke through the wall and found the parents of Mary Mulford (she
and Nathan Miller were parents of Mary Miller), which were Abraham and
Rebecca Stratton and just last week found all the Stratton connections. (3
more generation in NY.) Your ancestors bought from the Indians Montauk, Long
Island, owned property on Wall and Broad Streets in New Amsterdam (NY, NY)
and seem to have been an incredible fascinating bunch. (And I just scratched
the surface!) Possibly also wheeler and dealers (?). Just found a very
interesting book mentioning the whole family!
Jeremiah's (Jr.) parents were Jeremiah (b. 1756) and Phebe Schellinger.
Jeremiah Sr. was a Minute Man on Long Island and moved his family to
Beekmantown NY about 1809. His wife Phebe was born in Amaganset, L.I.
It was my fascination with Almira Parsons Elkins (my ggg-grandmother),
Nathan Miller and Sarah (Moore) Parsons' dau., that got me going. Most of
the information on the family can be found in the books I mentioned above.
And lots can be found on the web. I'll try to get some addresses for you
shortly.
For now.

She married VALENTINE E. STRAYER (Source: Forbes.FTW, Date of Import: Feb 11, 2001.) December 11, 1873 in West Union, IA, son of JOHN STRAYER and ELIZABETH HECKART. He was born November 12, 1848 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Missouri, and died November 14, 1937 in Fayette, IA.
Notes for MARY ELIZABETH PARSONS:
Moved to Fayette, IA, with her family in 1857, therefore an early pioneer of the area. Mary Parsons attended the Fayette schools and Upper Iowa University. She taught several terms, and married Valentine E. Strayer of Calmar in West Union, in 1873. Mary probably met Valentine while both were UIU students.
Mary joined the Fayette Methodist church August 26, 1896 and was very active in church activities until here hearing failed. In later years she wrote very remarkable letters to her children, kept her own home and had a keen mind. She like to garden and had many flowers, was artistic and continued to make hooked rugs until 91 years old. All of her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. Mary was healthy to the day before her death. Services were at the Belles funeral Home and interment was at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette.
Obit; Mary E. Parsons Strayer, was born in Elgin, Illinois, January 10, 1852. Her parents were David and Adalia Parsons, who came to Fayette Iowa, in 1857. She was married at West Union, at the residence of her sister, to Valentine E. Strayer of Calmar, in 1873, and honeymooned in Howard and Winneshiek counties. She was the mother of five children, Genevieve Belknapp who resided in McIntosh, South Dakota. Robert E. Strayer in Marion, Iowa. Catherine Dennis in Cleveland Ohio. Reuben A. of Fayette and Winnifred Hunt of Fayette. She had one brother Wallace who resided in California and two sisters Julia Waterbury of West Union and Lucretia Forde's of Topeka, Kansas.
Paper articles regarding death:
---June 29, 1944. Mrs. V. E. Strayer found dead at home. Fatal heart attack Tuesday morning caused the death of 92 year old resident in Fayette. Mary Parsons Strayer, was found dead on the stairs of her home Tuesday morning about 9 am. She had come down stairs and unlocked the outside door, and was returning when she passed away of a heart attack. Apparently she had been as well as usual on Monday and had done her washing and worked in her garden. Her daughter Winnifred Strayer Hunt, came to the house and went on out to work in the garden. After a few minutes she returned to the house and found her mother, as related. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Genevieve Belknap, McIntosh, SD; Mrs. Kate Dennis of Cleveland, OH; Mrs.. W. R. Hunt of Fayette, Robert of Marion, and Reuben A. of Chamberlain, SD. Funeral services will probably be held Friday afternoon, but final arrangements are awaiting the arrival of Mrs. Belknap and Rube Strayer who were expected last night.

Notes for VALENTINE E. STRAYER:
Notes: Valentine was born in Shelbyville, Missouri, November 12, 1848, of Elizabeth Heckart and John Strayer. His father and wife's brother Adam were running a grist mill about 5 miles SW of Shelbyville on a branch of the Salt River. The Heckart's were mill wrights and John apparently came into the Shelbyville area because of family connections back in PA. when Valentine was six, John Strayer and Adam Heckart migrated to the Freeport, Iowa area and set up a mill on the Upper Iowa River (then called the Iowa River). Valentine grew up in Freeport, and then at age 18+ went to UIU at Fayette to attend college from 1867-1869, which was quite unusual for the day. Very few men even went on to a "higher school" at this time. Valentine roomed on the 3rd floor of the College Hall, the only building on campus at the time. There were no stairs so ladders were used. He range the bell and did janitor work for tuition. While at UIU Valentine was well known for many cleaver and undetected pranks. He Graduated from UIU, July 1, 1869, in the 11th commencement of the college. At graduation he gave a presentation on "Chance", while his sister Ruth Strayer spoke on, "To seem and to be". While at UIU he was very involved with literary societies like "Zethegathean", and gave many well spoken production. Valentine took a teaching postilion in Calmar, Iowa, apparently in the fall of 1869. In 1871-1874, he became the Principal of Schools at Calmar. While going to UIU he must have met Mary Elizabeth Parsons, the daughter of an early Fayette pioneer family who came from Elgin, IL to Fayette in 1856. Valentine and Mary Parson were married at West Union, December 11, 1873. He was 25, she 21. During the summer of 1874, Valentine went into the Hardware Business in Calmar until 1893. The business also sold coal brought in on the train which came in from the Marion, Iowa area. Valentine was well known for his interest in civic and educational affairs, serving on the school board for 17 years, the city council for 12 years and as Mayor of Calmar for 3 years. In 1894, the family sold their Calmar interests and bought a farm just north of Fayette. They move shortly after that to Cresco for one year, then came back to Fayette, and about 1896 bought the Col. Aaron Brown Farm, about 4 miles SW of Fayette (just one mile south and the next section west of Eagle's Point). In 1918, the family moved into Fayette. Valentine died at his home in Fayette, Iowa, on November 14, 1937, at the age of 89 years, after a brief illness. Service was at Belles Funeral Home, with burial at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette. He left his wife Mary Parsons, three daughters, two sons, and 11 great-grandchildren. In 1937, his children were located at: Genevieve Belknapp in McIntosh, SD; Robert in Marion, Iowa; Katherine Dennis, Cleveland, OH; Reuben, Chamberlain, SD; Winnifred Hunt, Fayette. Valentine was known as well educated, a community participant and leader, friendly and kind. He like to camp, hunt and fish, often making long trips to the Dakotas or north to the Great Lakes.
Note from the Calmar correspondent for the Decorah Republican, May 6, 1902: Vol. Strayer was up from his Fayette county farm several days last week looking after the repairs of his store building damaged by the recent fire. A plate glass front is now one of the many impartments which make the building one of the most attractive hardware stores in the county. (apparently Valentine retained the Hardware Store in Calmar as property, even after buying the Col. Brown farm at Fayette)
Article--December 11, 1873---Married at the residence of L.W. Waterbury (sister of the bride) in West Union, Mr. Val E. Strayer of Calmar and Mary E. Parsons. The happy even occurred in the midst of a large gathering of friends from Fayette, Calmar, and West Union. The newly wedded pair started immediately for their home in Calmar. The good wishes of a wide circle of friends following them for a long and happy life.

Hiram Belknap, the son of Stephen Belknap, was born in New York state, September 3, 1808. He was married to Sarah Eastman, a native of New York, in the year 1836. To these were born five sons and two daughters: Charles Hiram, born August 25, 1837, is now a resident of Rapid City, South Dakota; Sarah Janette, born February 22, 1839, is no living at Petaluma, California; George William, born in 1841, is now a resident of Madison, South Dakota; Stephen Edgar, born March 25, 1848, is now a resident of Waterville, Minnesota; Riley Rosell, born December 12, 1840, is now living in Dexter, Kansas; Edward Eastman, born May 18, 1851, lives in Fayette, Iowa; Edith Esuba, born January 23, 1854, is now living in Oldham, South Dakota. These children were all born in New York State. The three eldest bothers served in the United States army during the Civil war.
In 1856 the Hiram Belknap family moved from New York to Wisconsin, which was a great undertaking in those days. From there they moved in 1863 to Auburn, Fayette county, Iowa. At this time, Auburn was one of the largest towns of Fayette county and Hiram plied his trade, that of a shoemaker, with great success.
A peculiar feature of this family was that both parents were cripples, Hiram having lost a leg in early life, and Sarah having suffered a paralytic stroke at the age of sixteen years from which she never fully recovered. Hiram died in December 1873, as the result of a fall on the ice, while returning from the village store. After the death of Hiram, Sarah lived with her children the rest of her days. She died at the home of her daughter Edith, at Madison, South Dakota, at the age of eighty-four years.

Clark Belknapp (you will note the 2ps - Clark changed is name by
adding the extra p because he was mad at his brother or brothers. So his
line carries the extra p all other Belknaps use just the one p and is usual
spelling of this name) married Gen Strayer sometime in the late 1880's. I
believe they were married in Iowa (city unknown) and subsequently moved to
Macintosh, South Dakota.

Notes for RAOUL ROBERT STRAYER:
An interview by BZ with wife Marc in 1995: Raoul graduated from Marion High School in 1921, worked a year during the days in a grocery store and in the evenings at an oil station. He saved, borrowed and got a little help from "dad" and went to Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa, in 1922, but ran out of money after two years. He took a job with the Lynn County engineer's office and went back to school. He graduated in 1927 with a B. S. in general engineering. Raoul lined up a job with the Link Belt Co., making elevators on 300 West Pershing Road, Chicago, IL, near the stock yards. He would have to sit and draw, and in hot weather the smell of the yards was oppressive. He worked there for four years. In 1930, Raoul suffered a ruptured appendix. While in the hospital he met an admitting nurse by the name of Marce, who would become his wife for life. Raoul worked another 1 1/2 years at Link. He wanted out of Chicago badly. One of his friends said that General Motors needed adjustors for their Insurance Company, so he went to Omaha and got the job. The couple would marry February 13, 1932. He was working in Sioux City, Iowa at the time and she still working at her joy in Chicago. Raoul borrowed $75 to go to Chicago, they got married and rode the train back to Sioux City. Raoul was making $149 per month at the time and apartments cost $75 per month. The couple had $300 between them. They lived in Sioux City from February 1932 to November 1932. Raoul's job moved them to Omaha, and after three months they transferred to Des Moines until 1936, then to Minneapolis from 1936-1942. During the war years he was located in Cleveland for the war effort and into the Fisher Body Plant of General Motors which was making B-29's by the end of the war. Raoul worked as an inspector in the plant until late 1945 when his job moved them back to Des Moines for the rest of their lives. He had developed multiple sclerosis in the 1940's while working for G.M., but kept working with the company for 22 years. He was retired by the company and did not work again until 1963 when he went to work for Preferred Risk for three years. He had some operations including a prostate. He went to the State House looking for a job in the Insurance Department, but ended up with a job in the Tax department for 11 years and was involved with starting the state withholding tax. He retired again in 1973.

Notes for MARCELLITTE EDITH:
Marc was working as the admittance nurse at the West Suburban Hospital in Oak Bark, IL, when Raoul was admitted for a burst appendix. After the couple moved to Des Moines, she started working at Iowa Luth. Hospital in 1949 during the polio epidemic, part time for the next five years. She then went to Armstrong Tire and Rubber Co., as a nurse for 15 1/2 years, retiring in July of 1970, but then went back to work part time October, 1970 to 1977 as a nurse with Wilson's Pack.
