English II

Class Description

American literature is a chronological study of the interrelationship of United States history, culture and literature.  Oral and written activities reinforce the text. Additionally, students write a formula MLA research paper. Skills of the previous years are reviewed and expanded.
 

Objectives
 

1. Students read and understand a variety of materials.
2. Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences.
3. Students write and speak using conventional grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
4. Students apply thinking skills to their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.
5. Students read to locate, select, and make use of relevant information from a variety of media, reference, and technological sources.

Policies
 

Cheating A student taking answers from another student receives a "0" for that assignment/test. The student allowing answers to be "lifted" also gets a "0".
Late assignments All class work is due at the beginning of the class period of the assigned day. 10% of the grades forfeited for each class period that he assignment is not turned in.
Class trades Tree unexcused ( no note) results in a demerit.
Taboo words Taboo words are not permitted in written assignments

Portfolio:  Type all final drafts of papers and place a copy in your portfolio

Grading:

All grades are equal.
Dropping/Replacing a Grade - Drop one of the first six grades.  Replace one of the next six grades. Listening Skills retain highest two of the first four grades.
 

Supplemental Reading

One extra novel per quarter.
All assignments typed in blue or black ink.
