October 2010

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s)),
Attached to this newsletter is the first of a five part series of parent information publications from the Office for the Protection of Children from the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The purpose of these publications is to help all of us be more informed of the issues and topics related to the abuse of children. It is our sincere hope that by partnering together we can continually provide the safest possible environment for all our young people to grow into healthy, Christ-filled adults. Please keep this first brochure in a handy place for your future reference. Future newsletter items will be distributed during the months of
November, December, January, and February. Additional resources can be found at the Virtus website at http://www.virtus.org.

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELORS OFFICE

Reminders: Here are a few ideas juniors and seniors should be working on...

Register to take the ACT or SAT tests if you have not already taken one or both of them. Check with Mr. Rubel for registration deadlines. You may retake the test if you are unhappy with your previous score.

Seniors: Research scholarship possibilities at the library, guidance office and through the web site www.IowaCollegeAid.gov.

Attend college fairs in your area and meet with college representatives who visit Marquette. Iowa College fairs are listed on the above web site.

Continue gathering information about colleges that interest you and begin a list of those that you may like to attend. Spend some time thinking about what you want out of a college and what type of college environment you will find most comfortable.

Obtain and begin working on college applications and essays. Remember, if you need a letter of recommendation, it is common courtesy to give the writer at least 10 days to complete the recommendation.

Beware of credit card offers! It is easy to quickly get in over your head. Talk to your parents before applying for any credit cards.

BEWARE of scholarship search and financial aid service organizations that charge a fee for service. Most of the information you may be seeking is available at no cost. Check with Mr. Rubel or search for free on the web site (www.IowaCollegeAid.gov). Marquette will also hold a financial planning session in November that will help you through the financial aid process for FREE.

Juniors: Be ready to take the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT). These scores are used to determine National Merit Scholars. This test will be given at Marquette on October 14. See Mr. Rubel for more details.

Freshman and Sophomores: Grades do matter. Colleges look at your overall grade point average (GPA). It is difficult to improve a GPA that starts low.

ALL St. Joseph and Marquette students - will be taking the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development during the weeks of November 1 and 8. It is very important for students to be in school on these tests dates. Every effort should be made not to schedule appointments and/or vacations during these test times.

Fall Play Parent Information
Parents, just so you know, rehearsals for fall play are almost always over by 8:30.  I can't promise it won't be a bit longer as we near the production date.  During the weeks of October 16 and 25, they might last longer, but I try to finish by 9:30 at the absolute latest even during those weeks.  Are your students getting home within a reasonable time of rehearsals' end?

Activity Passes
Please remember that if your student is in grades 6-12, we ask that an activity pass is purchased for him/her.  Even if your student will not use the pass because he/she is active in all sports, we ask that the pass is purchased.  The money from activity passes pays for transportation, supplies, and officials for athletics and the arts. The activity pass fee is in lieu of charging a fee for each activity your student participates. If you have not purchased your activity pass, please do so by calling Mrs. Janice Nass in the high school office, 87 2-3356.

Recycle
Recycle your paper! We are still collecting paper and chipboard (cereal boxes, tissue boxes, etc.) on our trailer in the high school parking lot. The more paper we collect, the more money Marquette catholic has to spend on our children! If you need to deliver large loads of paper when the trailer is not open, please contact the school to set up a time to deliver.

Sixth Grade
The sixth graders will be going to the Maquoketa Caves State Park and the Jackson County Interpretive Center on Sept. 30.

Second Grade
The second graders are working on building their writing skills with the Six Traits of Writing program.  Adding interesting details and sticking to the topic have been goals during theses first weeks. After reading "The Letter," the students wrote a letter to a classmate and were delighted when they received mail at home.
In Science the students are studying the solar system. Denny Weis also visited the class and brought turtles and a salamander to talk about.
The class is learning about the past in social studies. They will be visiting the Young Museum during October.
In religion the students are studying the sacrament of reconciliation. They have begun their service projects for the year reading to the residents of Mill Valley. they also will be doing an activity with their prayer partners at the nursing home each month. On September 22nd they met and did a "getting to know you" art activity with their sixth grade prayer partners.
