Now, moving on. Before moving to
Gaylord, I lived in Bellevue, Nebraska where my parents moved too in the summer of
2001. I lived in Davenport, Iowa for the previous 20 years of my life. I graduated
from Davenport North High School in Davenport. While there, I participated in track,
softball, soccer, and tennis. Although we often had a tough time competing
against other schools, we still had a lot of fun and that's what matters the
most. I worked at Hy-Vee for 3 years from 1997-2000, before working at
the Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois for the summer of 2000 and 2001. I worked on
various research projects for the government during these two summers. During
the summer of 2001, I also held a volunteer position at the National Weather
Service along with my job at the Arsenal. I updated their spotter database and
gained valuable experience of how operations are carried out at the NWS. During
the summer of 2002, I participated in a paid internship called the Student
Temporary Employment Position (STEP) with the National Weather Service in Valley,
NE (just outside of Omaha). This was a great start towards my future
career. Finally, during the summers of 2003 and 2004, I spent working at my dad's plant doing some
painting and cleaning. I also volunteered at KMTV in Omaha learning the TV side
of meteorology.
At Iowa State University, I was the vice president of the
Iowa State AMS
Chapter (American Meteorological Society). Members of this chapter put on a
TV show every Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 on channel 20 (ISU 20) called
Cy's Eyes
on the Skies. It was only a 15 minute show, but every minute was
entertaining and educational. The show was completely produced by
meteorology students and was a great way to get lots of valuable experience. I
was on the show several times and that's also about how many times I messed up,
haha. Just kidding!! The show had a host and two forecasters. One forecaster
gave the map discussion and the other forecaster gave the 5 day outlook. I was
the social chair during my first year of involvement with this group and the
webmaster during my second year. During my senior year, I was vice president of
the group, which kept me busy planning various events and trying to keep the
club active. I've enjoyed every minute of my experience
with the AMS group and Iowa State in general.
I lived in the dorms for all four of my years up at Iowa State. The name of our
house was
Barker. I have to say that Barker house was the most fun bunch of people
that I had ever been around. Their enthusiasm and participation was remarkable
and I am very glad to have been a part of it all. We participated heavily in
intramurals, Viesha, Varieties, and were famous for our open door policy. Of
course, being one of the only co-ed houses left on campus allowed for us to
stay extremely active in all areas of campus life and made us well known
throughout campus. Having a very social house like this made for one
memorable college experience. You can find out more about me by going to
