STOP PRESS!
- SMH Aug11 97- The backers of a private plan to site Sydney's second airport at Holworthy demanded a commitment of secrecy before last year's general election from eight leading Coalition leaders, most of them now ministers. Confidential documents obtained by the Herald show the promoters sought a bona fide understanding on the future of the project assuming the coalition won Government.
- SMH-July 28'97 - PM warned of mass protests as
15,000 join to fight airport - Saving Holsworthy military range would become the "largest urban environment protest this country has ever seen" unless the Federal Government changed its second airport agenda, a massive rally was told yesterday.
- The Federal Government has drawn up plans to replace the Federal Airports Corp with a new, government-owned authority to run Sydney airport and three associated airports - Bankstown, Camden and Hoxton Park airports, all within the Sydney Basin area, have also been removed from the sale list until Sydney airport's problems are at least partly resolved...A draft environmental impact statement, for sites at Badgery's Creek and Holsworthy, is likely to be released in the next fortnight, although the Government will not select the Sydney West site before next year.
- Jet Trouble
- "Contrail," we learn, is the word coined for "condensation trail," those long, white clouds that stream across the
sky behind jets long gone. As it turns out, the trails have been found to contribute to climate change, especially
along well-traveled airpaths such as the North Atlantic Flight Corridor and the standard routes across the
continental US.
- Not only do the world's commercial jets consume millions of gallons of fuel a day, they also emit
greenhouse gases directly into the troposphere (5.6 to 8 miles above the ground) and stratosphere (9 to 13 miles
above the ground). In the stratosphere, these emissions eat away at the ozone layer; in the troposphere, they
create ozone -- but of the wrong kind.
