Youth should get council chance

Re David Smolenaar's comment (YourCall, June 4) concerning young people being effective councillors. How could a thinking person disagree with having so many young people with talent and ability in our community not being on council?

As a classic example in Ward 4, Wollongong has a young person as a resident who is just bursting with ability, enthusiasm and a wonderful social conscious.

Ariane Lewis is brimming with talent, a talent the community of Wollongong could well benefit from.

How often does a community have a person who is Wollongong's Young Citizen of the Year, who then goes on, two years in a row to be a semifinalist in Australia's Young Citizen of the Year?

Recognising Ariane's ability when we were both hoard members of Radio Station Vox FM I proudly was her nominee for the nationwide search for Young Australian. Yes, Wollongong has other Arianes, who could very well be an asset to City Council, whose enthusiasm and ability must be nurtured.

To my understanding, David Smolenaars is a young person who is a member of the Dapto branch of the ALP. Here is a challenge for the ALP to put a young person on council.

In fact in the USA the president only serves two terms (eight years). It is possibly a thought that Wollongong could have councillors who would only be permitted to serve two terms.

This may well give young people a better opportunity to serve on council.

In fact the ALP now has a weighting of 50 per cent women in office, as can be seen by the charade being played out in the state seat of Wollongong. Here is a challenge to all political organisations. Have a weighting of 20 per cent for our younger people, give them the opportunity, they will not let us down.

Hopefully Ariane and her ilk put their hands up to run for council.

- CR TREVOR MOTT,

Wollongong City Council.
