INTRODUCING ACT'S WARD ONE TEAM

The Active Community Team has introduced its Ward One Team for the Wollongong Council elections. Headed by Cr Dave Martin, who has 12 years solid experience as a councillor behind him, together Cr Kerrie Christian, who has served 8 years on council representing the area, they are now joined by Les Gilleard from Helensburgh and Bob Challinor from Woonona. The team sees issues such as community facilities, suburban centre revitalisation, job growth, flood control, medium density concerns and traffic issues as key issues for the northern suburbs in Ward One.

Leading the team, Cr Dave Martin, Wombarra resident and founder of the ACT back in 1983, is a school principal and has been a strong voice for the northern suburbs, as well as for the city residents. He has worked tirelessly for decent services for the suburbs and not just in the CBD. Dave has also had a focus on escarpment and beachfront issues - believing that they are vital assets to the region and must not be damaged by inappropriate development. He believes that there is an urgent need for a review of the way council manages town planning and flooding issues. Dave Martin has also spearheaded the need for rate reform to ensure an approach that is fairer.

Cr Kerrie Christian replaced Dave Martin when he had a brief break from Wollongong Council in 1991-1995, and was re-elected in 1995. Kerrie grew up in Thirroul and still lives there, but with a husband commuting to Sydney she also appreciates the concerns of the new residents to the area. She works in industry as a metallurgist , and is a mother to a young school-aged daughter. Kerrie entered Council with strong environmental concerns and still am very involved in protecting the Hacking River, lifeblood of the Royal National Park and Wollongong Council's northern border. But as a mother Kerrie Christian has become more concerned about adequate community services throughout our city, as well as about heritage management.

Les Gilleard, a resident of Helensburgh for 23 years, is keen to see better services for Helensburgh. Sewage provision to suburbs such as Stanwell Park are high on his agenda. Les is also passionate about tourism, in particular ecotourism. He runs the Horizons Café at the top of Bulli Pass and as a member of the local chamber of commerce, believes that tourism has an important role to play in Wollongong's economic future and job generation. Les Gilleard believes that the Illawarra should not be the poor relations and believes that the region should be attracting more state resources to the area.

Bob Challinor, a Woonona resident has worked at the steelworks and Illawarra Electricity, but like many now finds himself unemployed. However he has busied himself with volunteering, in the past a volunteer fireman in Thirroul, and at the Diggers Rest Home in Corrimal. Currently he works with the Unemployed Workers Union to get a better deal for the unemployed and those on low incomes. He is also dedicated to ensuring that there is full community consultation on the Northern Distributor, and that it address environmental and heritage concerns. He considers that there is no room for party politics in local councils. Bob Challinor believes that Council needs to provide more facilities for the youth of the city and that they need to be listened to about their needs, rather than told what they need.
