CITY CYCLEWAY STRATEGY : A REALITY AT LAST!

Wollongong City Council's Cycleway Strategy is finally nearing reality according to Councillor Kerrie Christian, chair of the Cycleway Committee.

"I really have to congratulate the committee members," stated Councillor Christian, "they've put in many long hours into this proposal." The committee, which comprised three community representatives as well as the RTA, Education sector and NSW Police.

"We didn't always initially agree on proposed cycleway routes," explained Councillor Christian, "there was often a lot of debate, but the document is now something that we're all fairly happy with."

The Cycleway Committee have recommended routes for future cycleways both on and off road throughout the Wollongong Council area. According to Councillor Christian a key aim was to link the cycleway routes of Wollongong and Shellharbour.

Community input was sought via the media, as well as surveys of school students and steelworker cyclists. Cyclist representatives on the committee often test-rode the proposed routes to determine any problems.

"It would be great if we could now get further grant funding to extend the cycleway network," commented Councillor Christian, "clearly routes such as that recently completed from Sandon Point to Thirroul have been very popular."
