Following on my earlier representations regarding succession planning & retention of intellectual capital at the end of Wollongong Imaging Campaign GM's, contract, as well as the implications of the imminent Federal election and the likely change of government so that Wollongong can be well placed to have a strategy in place to capitalise on any economic development programs set up by the next Federal Government

I believe that this is an extremely significant time of change and that many areas will be putting their hands up and saying "me too" - many regions are already developing complex integrated wholistic strategies and pulling their communities together in order to bid for the projects and proposals likely to occur

I would propose that in order to bring about more synergy in the Re-imaging Innovation campaign that we look at Bob Doyle spending a period of time in Warwick MacMillan's office, subject to space availability concerns and that his final period of contract that he be located in the proposed economic development unit in Matt Waugh's area - to ensure that intellectual capital is not totally lost to Wollongong Council and that it is transferred to the proposed Wollongong City Council economic development unit

I would propose that Wollongong Council investigate the setting up of an economic development unit led by Matt Waugh - ie with a economic devopment strategist policy officer to develop policies - which Matt would of course promote via his networking and bidding for proposals and funding opportunities - the officer would work with other strategists in other appropriate organisations to ensure integration/cohesion of economic development initiatives undertaken by the multitude of organisations set up in this regard in Wollongong, and obviously seek to avoid duplication

I would propose Wollongong Council investigate the initiatives undertaken by Playford Council under Rodin Genoff and National Economics (-Graham Larcombe) - this may require a specialist to be appointed for a limited term to handle the on-the-ground work with the SME's in manufacturing - ie someone with a business development background and with the contacts already in place in this area, eg Jack Hennington type

I would propose that Wollongong Council look at the work already done by National Economics for ALGA, as well as the Hunter, Western Sydney, NE Melbourne, West Melbourne, NW Adelaide - to investigate where we may participate appropriately in the work being undertaken for manufacturing industrial areas such as Wollongong
