Re - Doug Rymer & the By Election Costs

I put a motion to my fellow councillors to approach the State Government to avoid a full by election and its high price tag. It meant using the provisions that would apply mayoral vacancies after January 1 2003. Word came back from the ALP State Government that it would not be supported. The majority of my fellow councillors did not support my motion at the July council meeting, just days before the lord mayoral resignation.

Even Deputy Lord Mayor Alex Darling refused my motion to find a way to avoid the $300,000 plus by election that was fast becoming an inevitable reality. He bellowed loudly and repeatedly that my proposal to avoid the spending of $300,000 of ratepayer funds was a nonsense. Interesting to now see Alex Darling back pedalling.

As an elected councillor I know that I tried to save the community money that could have been better spent, eg on playground equipment in the suburbs.
