HELENSBURGH ANGER: SUTHERLAND GREEN GROUPS UNITE TO SAVE THE HACKING

The State Government's action to call a Commission of Inquiry and to ignore Wollongong Council's decision on the environmental protection zoning in the Helensburgh district has angered Green groups from the Sutherland Shire, along with many in the Wollongong area.

"Wollongong Council received a huge 7000 submissions on the proposed environmental protection zonings for Helensburgh," explained Active Community Team Councillor Kerrie Christian, "and of those 5000 supported environment protection."

Last Tuesday night (10/5/94) Wollongong City Councillor Kerrie Christian was invited to attend a meeting of approximately 20 representatives from key green groups from Sutherland and the Helensburgh district to discuss the Commission of Inquiry. An umbrella coalition action group "Save the Hacking" was formed at the meeting held in the Sutherland Environment Centre.

"The Hacking River has its headwaters in Helensburgh," explained Councillor Christian, "and there is strong concern in the Sutherland Shire at the effect that further urbanisation of Helensburgh would have on siltation and water quality of the Hacking, especially as it flows through the Royal National Park and out into Port Hacking."

Councillor Christian said she was not surprised that as a result of the State Government's action that three marginal seats held by the Liberal Party in the Sutherland region may be contested by environmentalists in the upcoming state election.

"The Sutherland groups argued that the Hacking is an "icon" in the Shire," explained Councillor Christian, "and any threat to it is greeted with widespread alarm. That is why they are so concerned at what is happening in Helensburgh even though it is in Wollongong Council's area."
