HELENSBURGH AT THE CROSS ROADS - TIME FOR THE ALP TO PUT THEIR MONEY WHERE THEIR MOUTH IS

Cr Kerrie Christian, Active Community Team Lord Mayoral and Ward One candidate today called on the ALP to put their money where their mouth is regarding the Lady Carrington Estate at Helensburgh. The Lady Carrington Estate was one of the tracts of land rezoned to Environment Protection 7(d) earlier this year, following the 1994 Commission Of Inquiry into the future of land around Helensburgh.

In 1987 the ALP made an election promise to provide funds to extend the Royal National Park, in return for vitally needed environmental preferences, in order to secure the election of Ian McManus, for whom Cr Bill Barnetson now works as an electoral officer.

"The ALP State Government seemed to forget that commitment for the remaining year of that term in power, before they were beaten by the Liberals in 1988," explained Cr Christian.

"The land is environmentally sensitive, and it will never be fully protected until it is acquired by the State Government to extend the Royal National Park," insisted Cr Christian, " I would be very alarmed if it were divided up and sold into 400 individual allotments."

Cr Christian said that there was also a need to close loop holes in legislation which allowed small rural lots to be sold without services and building entitlements. "Somehow buyers of this sort of land get a false or vain hope that they won't have to wait too long to get a change in zoning so that they can build on this land, even though they have been warned by Council that there are no guarantees," explained Cr Christian.

"But now that the ALP is now in power at State Government they have the opportunity to honour their past state election promises to provide funds to extend the Royal National Park," explained Cr Christian, "Wollongong Council is also seeking the acquisition of the Lady Carrington Estate by the State, so that the Royal National Park can be extended."

"I certainly endorse Cr Barnetson's concerns about the sell off of the Lady Carrington Estate, into small lots that have no building entitlements," stated Cr Christian, "but it really is time that the ALP honoured its promises to voters at that Heathcote by-election which saw his boss, Ian McManus elected to State Government."

Cr Christian also explained that under a previous ALP State Government there was some sort of oversight and the land was sold to Ensile Pty Ltd, which is headed by developer Bob Hogarth, rather than to the National Parks & Wildlife Services so that it could be added to the Royal National Park. "We missed that opportunity to acquire the Lady Carrington Estate," commented Cr Christian, "and then after the 1987 Heathcote State By-Election the acquisition almost seemed to have been forgotten."

"We are now at the crossroads on the Helensburgh issue, there is now another opportunity to acquire the Lady Carrington Estate and have it added to the Royal National Park," stated Cr Christian, "we mustn't miss this chance.
