MEDIA RELEASE – HEWITTS CREEK STUDY EXPLOSIONS
Wollongong Council needs to act in good faith towards residents in Bulli who are facing the prospect of compulsory acquisition of their flood affected property, today stated Wollongong Council Ward 1 Councillor Kerrie Christian.
Cr Christian acknowledged that action had to be taken in regard to properties where it was considered that no matter what solutions were proposed for the whole catchment, that there were going to be some properties that will need to be acquired regardless of the outcome.
She also raised concerns about the compulsory confidentiality requirements placed on committee members, in regard to the issue of acquisition .. committee members are prevented from making statements about such acquisitions in case another option is developed.
“I personally have been very uncomfortable with this knowledge about acquisitions potentially being dealt with for a period of possibly several years by committee members, which includes people from the community, Stockland and various state government agencies, and yet the property owner maybe totally unaware of the situation,” explained Cr Christian.
“I believe it is totally amoral to make the Hamiltons in Bulli wait 5 years to get the acquisition,” insisted Cr Christian, “council needs to get on and organise it as quickly as possible.”
