MINUTES OF WOLLONGONG CITY COUNCIL - JULY 22 2002

ITEM 2 - NOTICE OF MOTION - COUNCILLOR KERRIE CHRISTIAN - APPROACH TO NEW SOUTH WALES LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINITES, NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNMENT AND GOVERNOR OF NEW SOUTH WALES - NOMINATION OF LORD MAYOR - REPORT OF MANAGER FINANCE, ADMINISTRATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (LW) 2/7/02

Councillor Christian has submitted the following Notice of Motion:

"That Wollongong City Council make an approach to the New South Wales Local Government Minister, the New South Wales Government and the Governor of New South Wales, that in the event of the need to replace the Lord Mayor of the City of Wollongong and where this election would occur less than twelve months until the next ordinary election in September 2003, that Wollongong City Councillors be permitted to nominate one of their number to be appointed by the Governor of New South Wales as Lord Mayor until the next ordinary election in September 2003, on the basis that there is an urgent need for a healing of the City, the expenditure involved, the divisiveness engendered in the last three months particularly and noting that this action and method to replace the Lord Mayor would normally only take place from 1 January 2003, should the situation arise."

MOVED Councillor Christian seconded Councillor Wood that -

Wollongong City Council make an approach to the New South Wales Local Government Minister, the New South Wales Government and the Governor of New South Wales, that in the event of the need to replace the Lord Mayor of the City of Wollongong and where this election would occur less than twelve months until the next ordinary election in September 2003, that Wollongong City Councillors be permitted to nominate one of their number to be appointed by the Governor of New South Wales as Lord Mayor until the next ordinary election in September 2003, on the basis that there is an urgent need for a healing of the City, the expenditure involved, the divisiveness engendered in the last three months particularly and noting that this action and method to replace the Lord Mayor would normally only take place from 1 January 2003, should the situation arise.

An AMENDMENT was MOVED by Councillor King seconded Councillor Jonovski that -

Wollongong City Council make an approach to the New South Wales Local Government Minister, the New South Wales Government and the Governor of New South Wales, that in the event of the need to replace the Lord Mayor of the City of Wollongong and where this election would occur less than twelve months until the next ordinary election in September 2003, that Wollongong City Councillors be permitted to nominate one or more of their number to be appointed by the Governor of New South Wales as Acting Lord Mayor until the next ordinary election in September 2003, on the basis that there is an urgent need for a healing of the City, the expenditure involved, the divisiveness engendered in the last three months particularly and noting that this action and method to replace the Lord Mayor would normally only take place from 1 January 2003, should the situation arise.

The AMENDMENT on being PUT to the VOTE was LOST.

The MOTION on being PUT to the VOTE was LOST.
